Abstract

This study is entitled An Analysis of Colonialism in “The Story of Pocahontas”. The purpose of the study is to identify how colonialism is represented and how colonialism affects the main characters as evidenced in the text. The data are in the forms of words, phrases, and sentences that are critically analyzed and purposively selected as textual evidence to answer the research questions. The analysis employs the theory of colonialism as proposed by Loomba (1998) and also post-colonialism as proposed by Edward Said (as cited in Barry, 2002) and Ashcroft, et al (2007). The study found that colonialism is represented in practice, attitude, and belief. Moreover, it also found that colonialism as evidenced in the text affects the main characters; Captain Smith and Pocahontas’s language, identity, and religion. The study concludes that the representation of colonialism is considered as the action of oppression which comes from the group that is perceived as superior. In contrast, colonialism affects the main characters in a positive way. The main characters who are from two opposing group of people can become friends rather than enemies. This leads to the assumption that despite a lot of harm colonialism can cause, it may have a small benefit.
