Abstract

This present research, entitled “American Dream in the Novel The Ghost Written by Danielle Steel: a Sociology Analysis”, deals with the depiction of American Dream that is revealed by Sarah Ferguson, the main character in the story. The aims of this research are, (1) to reveal the concept of American Dream as revealed by the main character, (2) to analyze how the main character behaves and acts in making her dreams come true, and (3) to examine the author’s concept of American Dream in the 18th century. This research used library research method by which various data were collected and used to support the analysis. In approaching the topic, the researcher used sociology of literature theory and the intrinsic elements of the novel. The sociology of literature is used to help analyzing the concept of American Dream in the story. The intrinsic elements is used to analyze Sarah Ferguson’s characterization in achieving her American Dream and to analyze the author’s perception of American Dream in the 18th century. The results of this research indicate that (1) according to the time period, it is true that Sarah Ferguson, the main character in the story, dreamed of freedom. It was the freedom in which she lived her own life, free from any kind of oppression and rule that tied her and free to decide her own future; (2) in order to achieve her American Dream, Sarah Ferguson follows American values namely hard-working, optimistic, and brave, and that is the reason that she finally succeeds. Her character supports her act to make her dreams come true; (3) Danielle Steel’s perception on American Dream in the 18th century is in line with traditional concept of American Dream proposed by Norton, Katzman, and Yuttle (1982) saying that the Americans dreamed of freedom and opportunity. As a conclusion, the concept of American Dream in the novel is in accordance with the concept of American Dream in the American society. It is know after analyzing the social aspects of the novel using sociology of literature.
