Abstract

The study is entitled ‘The Use of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension. This study aimed at investigating whether there is a significant difference between a group that used reciprocal teaching strategy and a group that did not use it. It also aimed at finding out students’ responses toward the advantages and the disadvantages of using the strategy. The research employs quasi experimental with pre test and post test design. Data collected through pre test and post test were analyzed by using SPSS. The data analysis of independent t-test shows that there is a difference between post test means for both of control and experimental group. Therefore, it can be stated that the use of reciprocal teaching strategy is considered effective in teaching reading and has different result in improving students’ reading comprehension. Furthermore, the result indicates the students’ positive responses toward the use of reciprocal teaching strategy particularly in reading an English text. Moreover, there are some factors in improvement student’s reading when using reciprocal teaching in reading comprehension. The first is related to student’s interest and motivation to engage in reading activity using reciprocal teaching strategies. The second is related to teacher’s ability to modelling the strategies.
