Abstract

Speaking skill is very crucial to Indonesian EFL (English Foreign Language) students since the functions of speaking that cover many aspects of human interaction. The functions are to express ideas and opinions, to express feeling and a wish or a desire to do something, to express instructions, describe something, negotiate, solve particular problem, establishing and building social relationship and friendships, maintaining business or other professional reasons (Richards and Renandya, 2002). Particularly, for junior high school level, one of the teaching speaking goals is to enable students to express meaning on spoken functional text and short monologue in descriptive and procedure forms to interact closely with their environment. Teaching speaking by using a good method is necessary to meet the goal. This study is a quasi-experimental study which examines the effectiveness of using series pictures in improving students’ speaking skill in procedure text and students’ responses toward the use of series pictures in teaching speaking. The study involved two classes of the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Cipeundeuy as the sample. The data were obtained through a pre-test, a post-test and an interview. The speaking assessment was adopted from C.J. Weir (1990) covering fluency, grammar, context and vocabulary. The findings were then analyzed statistically by using independent t-test procedure on SPSS 16.0 for windows program and the calculation of effect size. The statistical computation showed that the use of series picture was likely effective in improving the students’ speaking skill in procedure text (tobt 4.548 > tcrit 2.000, r = 0.549). Furthermore, there were six positive perception of the use of series pictures in speaking revealed: facilitating the students to speak (explain instructions on how to do/make something) easily, increasing students’ vocabularies, increasing students’ self-confidence, fostering students to understand the material easily, drawing students’ motivation to learn the lesson and creating a fun atmosphere. In reference to the result of the study, the conclusion was drawn that the use of series picture is appropriate to be used as an alternative technique in teaching speaking. As the suggestion, the use of series picture is recommended to be applied during teaching and learning speaking in junior high schools. It is also important for teachers to select particular pictures appropriate with the students’ needs, interests, and the curriculum as well.
