Abstract

This study entitled “The Relationship between Students’ Academic Self-Efficacy and Their Learning Participation in Speaking Class” (A descriptive study of the first-year English Department Students in UPI) was aimed at investigating the relationship between students’ academic self-efficacy and their learning participation. This study applies descriptive quantitative method on which the data were collected by observing and administering questionnaires. The data were analyzed with SPSS using Spearman Rank formula (Sugiyono, 2001; Siegel, 1997). Based on Champion’s criteria (1981), there is a moderately high association (rs=0,565) between the two investigated variables, whereas the determination coefficient is 32%. This study also reveals that: a) verbal persuasion aspect has been the most influential sources (88%) to the degree of self-efficacy, b) the most reluctant issue in students’ participation is the lecturer, and c) B2 students show higher level tendency for participation than B1 students (using Porto’s criteria). This study may give a picture to the readers that self-efficacy has become a good contributor to students’ participation and that parents and teacher are one of the wonderful suppliers of these students’ self-belief.
