Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is entitled References as a Cohesive Device and Their Translations into Indonesian Language (A Study of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code Novel). This study is intended to answer two questions: 1) what types of references which are contained in Dan Brown’s the Da Vinci Code novel, and 2) how are references in the sentences of Dan Brown’s the Da Vinci Code novel translated from English into Indonesian language. There are 80 sentences with reference types in the novel, which are derived from three parts of the novel by using a cluster sample technique, taken as the data. The three parts of the novel comprise the first pages (chapter 1- chapter 5), the middle pages (chapter 51- chapter 55), and the last pages (chapter 101-chapter 105). The data are analyzed with qualitative research design using the descriptive and comparative method. The result of the study shows that 1) there are three types of references in the novel: 38 personal references, 21 demonstrative references, and 21 comparative references, furthermore 2) some translation procedures, which are stated by Newmark (1988: 81-93), are employed to translate reference types. Synonymy procedure is the most frequently used; it is about 60%. The others are descriptive equivalent (8.75%), deletion (7.5%), additional information (1.25%), componential analysis (1.25%), paraphrase (2.5%), couplets (13.75%), and adaptation (5%). After investigating the data, there are some differences between English references and Indonesian references: 1) Indonesian personal references do not differentiate clearly in terms of subject, object, or possessive pronoun, 2) there is no plural form of demonstrative reference in Indonesian language, and 3) there are so many Indonesian modifiers which are used as Indonesian comparative references.
