Abstract

This study, entitled “The Representations of Diplomatic Relations between Indonesia and Malaysia in The Jakarta Post and The Malaysian Insider Articles Regarding The Maritime Boundary Disputes”, investigates the representation of diplomatic relation between Indonesia and Malaysia in The Jakarta Post and The Malaysian Insider articles and the ideology underlying the representation. This study applies critical discourse analysis framework. Four articles are selected and transitivity system is employed to identify the representation of diplomatic relation. This study finds three representations of the diplomatic relation, i.e. as the best solution, a love-hatred relation and a sensitive issue. Meanwhile, it is found that the ideologies underlying the news report in The Jakarta Post are nationalism, peace and capitalism (business) and the ideologies of The Malaysian Insider are peace and capitalism. It is concluded that both news media realize the diplomatic relation between Indonesia and Malaysia is the hot topic in the society and expect both nations to keep a conducive relation.
