Abstract
The present study examines the representation of the United States of America (the US) in Obama’s speeches regarding Libyan conflict in 2011. It focuses on the way the US is represented in the text and the ideologies underlying the representation. This study mainly employs qualitative method supported with some descriptive quantification. The data include four Obama’s speeches regarding Libyan conflict that were delivered between February 2011 and March 2011. They are analyzed by using the sociosemantic approach to critical discourse analysis proposed by van Leeuwen (2008). It is found that the US is represented through inclusion (98.16%) and exclusion (1.84%). The inclusion that frequently occurs in the texts shows that the US tries to be seen as an active actor in the military operation. The US is also represented inclusively with other social actors who have relation with the US to show that the military operation in Libya was not done individually by the US, but collectively by a group where the US becomes part of it. Meanwhile, the less occurrence of exclusion shows that the US tries to show less domination in the military operation in Libya. It is also found that there are three ideologies underlying the representation in the text i.e. democracy, humanitarianism, and the US as “global police”. Democracy is shown through the action of the US in helping Libya to fight for Libyan’s democracy, while humanitarianism is shown through the action of the US in supporting Libya morally as well as materially in the conflict. The US also affirms its position as “global police” who will help wherever injustice occurs. Through the representation, the US is creating a good impression of heroism to the world, i.e. that they have helped Libyan people to face the conflict.
