Abstract

Under the term of problem solving, this study was conducted to examine the cognitive strategies in argumentative writing among three English student debaters. The study was aimed at finding the students’ cognitive strategies and, if any, metacognitive strategies. The study used qualitative method where the data were gained through questionnaire, protocol, written documents, and interview. The questionnaire was used as the basis of choosing the participants and themes to be used in think aloud sessions. The think aloud protocols were then followed by interviews. All of the data were then color coded under the terms of problem from Cumming (1989) to be further analyzed by using the classifications of strategies of cognitive and metacognitive strategies from Wenden (1991). The findings show that the respondent students used both of cognitive and metacognitive strategies. Cognitive strategy which was mostly used by the respondents was retrieval. The absence of the other kinds of cognitive strategies was due to the respondents’ familiarity with the topic. However, the respondents also used metacognitive strategies as to address the argumentative writing task. The strategies which were used comprise planning and evaluating. This study concludes that there is a tight connection between cognitive strategies and the nature of task. Accordingly, there are at least some aspects to be taken into account within the field of writing, namely various kinds of assigned essays, assorted topics and regular writing assignments.
