Abstract
ABSTRACT The research entitled “Rhetoric by Radio Announcers in Grice’s Cooperative Principle at Ardan Radio Bandung” is an analysis of the rhetoric (utterances) said by the announcers in their daily live broadcastings. Four announcers chosen became the sample to represent the population of the research. The data were collected through recording, transcribing, and interviewing the announcers. In the conclusion, the research finds the maxims mostly violated by radio announcers were maxim of quantity and maxim of manner; while the maxims mostly observed were maxim of quality and maxim of relevance. The violations to the maxims were formalized when the announcers used “bridging technique” to deliver broadcasting materials in terms of information and adlibs. On the other hand, the observances to the maxims were formalized when the announcers used “brainwashing technique” to deliver broadcasting materials in term of tagline. In addition, based on the announcers’ views, the violations and observances to the maxims were intrinsically motivated to make the radio program interesting for the listeners. The violations occurred because the announcers sometimes needed to speak comfortably and enjoyably in the long duration; while the observances occurred because the announcers also sometimes needed to speak explicitly and fast in the short duration.
