Abstract

This study is concerned with the performance of three English pre-service teachers of Indonesia University of Education in Senior High School 8 in Bandung and the benefits and challenges faced by the three English pre-service teachers in the program. It aims to figure out the teaching performance of the three participants when conducting instructional activities, and benefits and challenges that the three participants found during the program. The teaching performance was divided into four domains, including: preparation, presentation, instruction and classroom interaction, and interpersonal skills. This study used a case study research design. To answer the research questions, this study used three data collection techniques, namely: questionnaire, interview, and observation. Regarding the teachers’ teaching performance, this study adapted theory of teaching task Reece (2004) and Danielson’s (1996) Teachers’ Competence Profile, and Brown’s (2001) theory of characteristics of Good Language Teacher. It is intended to figure out the participants’ competence in the technical knowledge: subject knowledge and pedagogic knowledge, pedagogical skills, and interpersonal skill. The findings of the study reveal that the three participants showed their competence in several aspects of professional teachers, as indicated by their competence in the technical knowledge: subject knowledge and pedagogic knowledge, pedagogical skills, and interpersonal skills. Regarding the benefits and challenges faced by the participants in this program, the findings indicate that the three participants found that pre-service teaching program provided them with experiences of teaching. Moreover, the participants found challenges when conducting the teaching-learning process. The challenges were mainly in the domains of presentation and instruction and classroom interaction.
