Abstract

Essentially, this study is a study of how to implement the Civics Education learning which is integrated in social subject by making use thematic approach. This study was conducted in Sekolah Dasar Alam Bandung because of several considerations such as that this school implements thematic approach holistically started from the first until the fifth grade. This study is aimed at investigating the implementation of the Civics Education learning which is integrated in the social subject through the thematic approach. This study utilized qualitative approach with case study method and the data were obtained through observation, interview, literature study, documentation study, and field notes. The subjects of this present study is all school’s compononents i.e. the head of the foundation, the head teacher, the teachers, and the students. The data analysis technique consisted of three simultaneous activities i.e. the data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/ verification. The findings show that the great awareness and understanding of the Civics Education learning which have been integrated in many learning activities with thematic approach indicate a high commitment to the subject. In terms of designing the learning program, the teachers of Sekolah Dasar Alam Bandung develop it based on the policy set by the school which is very differrent with the common thematic learning design. However, the Civics Education learning process through the thematic approach has been done well indicated by the student-centered learning process which is based on the activity in the nature. The evaluation process done by the teachers in Sekolah Alam Bandung is based on the government law (Peraturan Pemerintah/PP) No. 19, 2005. The supporting factors of the planning, implementation, and evaluation are the integrated materials, teachers communication, and the school facilities. The inhibitor factors are the unrelevant materials, the open space classrooms, students’ condition, the division of Civics Education’s score with Social Study’s score, and individual evaluation. Those factors are minimized by making a continuous coordination between the head teacher and teachers, theachers and teachers, teachers and parents, and teachers and students. It is recommended that the development of integrated Civics Education learning
