Abstract
This thesis reports on the effectiveness of a program which attempted to synthesize classroom practices informed by critical thinking, critical literacy and critical pedagogy in teaching reading to students who were learning English as a foreign language in a private university, in Bandung, West Java. The study utilized a qualitative research design, taking the characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from several sources: 1) a teaching phase in which the researcher acted as a teacher, 2) questionnaires which were distributed at the beginning of the program to identify the students’ background in English language and also their basic knowledge in critical reading. The results of the questionnaire were used to determine the sequence of the teaching program and also the approach towards each student during the program, 3) collection of students’ works in various phases of the teaching program, by distributing a set of critical reading questions in every meeting which was taken as the main material in finding out students’ progress during the teaching program, 4) interview sessions which were held twice, at the 6th meeting and the last meeting of the program. The general purpose of these sessions is to identify students’ opinion about the program, their suggestion for the program, and also to bring students’ consciousness of what they have gained during the program, 5) students’ journals written after each teaching session which was taken as the supporting data. At the end of every meeting, students were asked to write their feeling, opinion, and also what they thought they gained at the meeting from teacher and also from their friends. The findings revealed that despite some limitations, the teaching program was successful in some ways. Most significantly, the students’ critical reading and thinking skills improved given that they are able to provide appropriate expected answers towards a set of critical reading questions which are purposely arranged to measure students’ improvement in critical reading skill. Furthermore, data from classroom observations, students’ journals and interview showed that the students were conscious of having made progress in critical reading and critical thinking abilities taught in the program.
