Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating students translation methods, problems and solutions in translating the 11" chapter of Nicholas Sparks' novel entitled A Letter from Yesterday. The study involved six students from various levels of achievement of the eighth semester in English department of UPI. A qualitative approach, particularly case study, was employed in this study. Data were collected through transiation test of the chapter and interviews were conducted with the students. The data from the students' translation were analyzed by using the translation methods from Newmark (1988) and Larson (1984), which were then assessed by Larson's criteria of acceptable translation (1984). Meanwhile, the data from the interview were analyzed to discover the problems encountered by the students in translating the chapter and also the solutions they used in handling the problems. The study revealed that the students were generally successful in delivering the message contained in the I 1" chapter of the novel. In delivering the message the students employed several methods of translation from Newmark (1988), such as word-for-word, literal, free, and communicative translation. The clear, accurate and natural translation was accomplished especially when the students used communicative and literal translation methods. The linguistic problems encountered by the students were mostly about lexical and semantic ambiguities. They handled those problems mostiy by translating the text literally, which led to inappropriate translation. Meanwhile, there was almost no cultural problem faced by the students. Despite all the problems, all the students were able to deliver the message of the chapter successfully.
