Abstract

Algebraic thinking is a very important ability because algebra is basically one of the conceptions used as a problem solving tool, both in school and in everyday life. The purpose of this study was to analyze and describe the results of students' algebraic thinking skills in terms of self-efficacy and gender in the material of a two variable linear equation system. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method with a case study design. The subjects of this study consisted of 6 male and female students, consisting of 2 people with high self-efficacy, 2 people with moderate self-efficacy and 2 people with low self-efficacy. The results of this study indicate that 1) only male students with high self-efficacy and female students with moderate self-efficacy are able to define variables correctly, 2) male students with moderate self-efficacy and female students with moderate self-efficacy low efficacy is less precise in representing problems into a two variable linear equation system, 3) only male students and female students with high self-efficacy and male students with moderate self-efficacy can perform quantitative reasoning properly and correctly, and 4) In the component modeling and problem solving, almost all students can make a two variable linear equation model of the given problem.
