Abstract

ABSTRACT Yuli Fitrianti (2022). Genetic Decomposition of the Concept of Division in the Basic Number Theory Course. The concept of division in the Basic Number Theory course is an essential concept in mathematics since this concept is the main idea in the course; and is widely used in algebraic studies such as elementary linear algebra and structural algebra (abstract algebra), as well as other applied sciences. This study aims to produce a hypothetical model that describes the structure and mental mechanisms that may be needed by prospective mathematics teacher students to construct the concept of division in the Basic Number Theory course. This hypothetical model is called the genetic decomposition of the division concept. This research is a research based on APOS (Action, Process, Object, Schema) which uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The research procedure used to capture phenomena in APOS-based research (Action, Process, Object, Schema) refers to a specific framework consisting of: 1) development of initial genetic decomposition for the concept of division (theoretical analysis); 2) design and implementation of the ACE Cycle (Activities, Class discussions, Exercises); and 3) collection and analysis of data obtained from the implementation of the ACE Cycle (Activity, Class discussion, Exercise), where data analysis can lead to modification of the initial genetic decomposition for the concept of division. Researchers used data collection techniques consisting of documents, tests, observations, and interviews. The research subjects involved in the tests, observations, and documents were 28 students of 2018 mathematics teacher candidates, semester 2, and study group 3 at Study Program of Education, State Islamic University Of Raden Fatah Palembang. Meanwhile, the interview subjects consisted of 8 students who took the learning and division concept test. In general, the stages in data analysis are 1) organizing and preparing data for analysis, 2) reading and viewing all data, 3) coding all data, 4) building descriptions and themes, and 5) representing descriptions and themes. The theoretical basis for analyzing data is the initial genetic decomposition of the concept of division. Based on the results of data analysis, this study produced an initial hypothesis model and a revision based on the results of empirical tests (genetic decomposition of the concept of division), where the alleged construction began with the construction of the action, process, and division object on non-negative integers; then used those constructed to construct actions, processes, and division objects on negative integers; then synthesized the division objects on non-negative integers and negative integers to construct the integer division scheme. In addition, this study also produced students' thinking processes in constructing the concept of division and the difficulties experienced by students during the empirical test. Analysis of student responses in the implementation of learning showed the way or process of thinking in constructing the concept of division which is identified into 5 constructions, namely the interiorization of the action of dividing a non-negative integer with a positive integer into the process; encapsulation of various processes that transform non-negative integer division into division algorithms; de-encapsulation of the non-negative integer division algorithm to obtain the properties of the division of non-negative integers to then be applied to the division of negative integers; encapsulation of various processes that transform the division of negative integers into a division algorithm; and the synthesis of non-negative integer division algorithms and negative integers into integer division algorithms to partition integers into several subsets. The researcher identified 3 difficulties during students constructing of the concept related to quotient and remainder, interval of remainder, as well as a lack of algebraic abilities such as algebraic generalization, interpretation of algebraic forms, recognizing algebraic structures, and algebraic manipulation. Keywords: APOS theory (Action, Process, Object, Schema), genetic decomposition, division concept.
