Abstract

Controlled release fertilizer (CRF) merupakan salah satu teknologi yang dikembangkan untuk diaplikasikan di bidang pertanian dengan tujuan menanggulangi permasalahan terkait efektifitas pelepasan nutrisi tanaman dari dalam pupuk. Umumnya, matriks yang digunakan dalam CRF berupa hidrogel. Penelitian ini bertujuan menentukan komposisi optimum untuk mensintesis flek hidrogel PVA/borat/kitosan-Kalium Klorida (KCl), mengetahui karakteristik flek hidrogel PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl mencakup morfologi dan karakteristik gugus fungsi hidrogel, serta mengetahui performa flek hidrogel PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl meliputi ketebalan hidrogel, swelling ratio, water retention, dan release behavior. Metode yang digunakan untuk karakterisasi morfologi flek hidrogel PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl dilakukan menggunakan instrumen SEM dan karakterisasi gugus fungsi hidrogel menggunakan spektrofotometer FTIR. Komposisi optimum hidrogel PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl didapat pada perbandingan volume PVA: borat: kitosan 8:1:5 dengan volume KCl 1 mL. Morfologi permukaan flek hidrogel PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl berupa permukaan datar disertai adanya agregat kecil. Karakterisasi FTIR menunjukkan bahwa spektrum PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl memiliki kemiripan dengan spektrum PVA/borat/kitosan mengindikasikan KCl berinteraksi dengan PVA/Borat yang menyebabkan terjadinya pergeseran puncak serta peningkatan intensitas pada spektrum. Hasil analisis menujukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi antara performa ketebalan hidrogel dengan swelling dan release behavior. Hidrogel yang lebih tebal cenderung lebih lambat dalam melepaskan KCl ke dalam medium, namun memiliki nilai swelling ratio yang relatif lebih rendah. Hasil analisis profil kinetika pada performa swelling dan release behavior menunjukkan bahwa grafik swelling ratio linear dengan persamaan laju orde dua sedangkan grafik release behavior linear dengan persamaan laju orde satu. Hasil analisis terhadap performa swelling ratio, water retention dan release behavior menunjukkan bahwa flek hidrogel PVA/Borat/Kitosan-KCl cukup menjanjikan untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai CRF. Controlled release fertilizer (CRF) is one of the technologies developed to be applied in agriculture with the aim of overcoming problems related to the effectiveness of releasing plant nutrients from fertilizers. Generally, the matrix used in CRF is a hydrogel. This study aims to find the optimum composition for synthesizing PVA/borate/chitosan/potassium chloride (KCl) hydrogel flakes, to determine the characteristics of PVA/borate/chitosan-KCl hydrogel flakes, including morphology and characteristics of hydrogel functional groups, and to determine the performance of PVA/borate/chitosan-KCl hydrogel flakes include hydrogel thickness, swelling ratio, water retention, and release behavior. The method used for morphological characterization of PVA/borate/chitosan/KCl hydrogel flakes was carried out using SEM instruments and the characterization of hydrogel functional groups using FTIR spectrophotometer. The optimum composition of the PVA/borate/chitosan-KCl hydrogel was obtained at a volume ratio of PVA: borate: chitosan 8:1:5 with a volume of 1 mL KCl. The surface morphology of the PVA/borate/chitosan-KCl hydrogel flakes is mostly flat with small aggregates. FTIR characterization showed that the PVA/borate/chitosan-KCl spectrum was similar to the PVA/borate/chitosan spectrum, indicating that KCl interacted with PVA/Borate causing a shift in peaks and an increase in the intensity of the spectrum. The results of the analysis show that there is a correlation between the performance of hydrogel thickness with swelling and release behavior. Thicker hydrogels tend to be slower in releasing KCl into the medium, but have a relatively lower swelling ratio value. The results of the kinetic profile analysis on swelling performance and release behavior show that the swelling ratio graph is linear with the second order rate equation, while the release behavior graph is linear with the first order rate equation. The results of the analysis on the performance of swelling ratio, water retention and release behavior showed that the PVA/borate/chitosan-KCl hydrogel flakes were promising to be used as CRF.
