Abstract

----- This research is motivated by the importance of mathematical understanding which is a basic ability among other mathematical abilities that must be mastered by students. However, the facts in the field show that the level of mathematical understanding ability of students in Indonesia is relatively low, the cause of this is because teachers still use the conventional teaching method, namely relying on the lecture method and lack of development learning media. Therefore, the use of innovation from the learning approach, namely the CPA approach so that learning can be more meaningful to students. The objectives of this research are: 1) to find out the improvement in the mathematical understanding ability of elementary school students who received the CPA learning approach better than students who received the conventional approach; 2) to determine the effect of the CPA approach on students' mathematical understanding abilities in learning mathematics in elementary schools. The type of research used is a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design, by giving pretest-posttest to both learning groups in learning mathematics in an elementary school in Purwakarta District. This research was conducted on class II students with 40 students as subjects. The instrumen in this study uses quantitative data through a mathematical understanding ability test in the form of a description given before and after the learning treatment in the experimental class and the control class. The results obtained are 1) There is an increase in the mathematical understanding ability of students who are treated with the CPA learning approach better than students who are treated with conventional learning approaches; 2) There is an effect of the CPA learning approach on increasing mathematical understanding abilities. Based on the results of this study recommend the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) model as an alternative to improve students' mathematical understanding skills in the subject matter of multiplication.
