Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini berjudul “Peranan Nation of Islam (NOI) dalam Memperjuangkan Hak-Hak Sipil Kaum Kulit Hitam di Amerika Serikat tahun 1930-1976”, dengan latar belakang ketertarikan peneliti akan perjuangan hak-hak sipil yang dilakukan oleh kelompok kulit hitam di Amerika Serikat, perjuangan kebebasan hak sipil tersebut dilakukan oleh organisasi NOI yang dibentuk pada tahun 1930. NOI merupakan organisasi kaum kulit hitam yang menggunakan asas islam dalam gerakannya, tujuan utamanya adalah kebebasan hak sipil kaum kulit hitam. NOI menjadi wadah kebencian kaum kulit hitam terhadap kaum kulit putih karena diskriminasi rasial yang selama ini mereka rasakan. Masalah utama dalam penelitian ini adalah “bagaimana upaya yang dilakukan oleh NOI dalam memperjuangkan kebebasan hak sipil kaum kulit hitam di Amerika Serikat dari tahun 1930-1976?” dengan menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah (metode historis) yang meliputi heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi, dan historiografi, dengan teknik studi literature dalam pengumpulan data mengenai topik pembahasan. Konsep yang digunakan dalam menganalisis skripsi ini adalah konsep mesianisme, diskriminasi rasial, etnosentrisme, dan Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM) yang akan menjelaskan latar belakang terbentuknya NOI, upaya yang dilakukan NOI dalam memperjuangkan hak-hak sipil kaum kulit hitam dari tahun 1930 hingga 1976, serta dampak perjuangan NOI terhadap hak-hak sipil kaum kulit hitam di Amerika Serikat. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan latar belakang didirikannya NOI adalah untuk menyelamatkan kehidupan kaum kulit hitam di Amerika Serikat dari segala bentuk diskriminasi rasial, segregasi, dan streotipe negatif yang berujung pada perjuangan kebebasan hak sipil. Adapun upaya yang dilakukan NOI dalam memperjuangkan hak-hak sipil kaum kulit hitam melalui pemulihan identitas dan kepercayaan diri ras Afro-Amerika, pengembangang ekonomi mandiri, dan menjalin hubungan dengan negara lain. Kemudian dampak yang diberikan oleh NOI terhadap perjuangannya dalam kebebasan hak sipil adalah menaikkan derajat kaum kulit hitam atas sosial dan ekonominya, membangun sejumlah aset milik kaum kulit hitam berupa toko, restoran, sekolah, tanah, dan surat kabar yang bernama Muhammad Speaks. ABSTRACT This study entitled "The Role of the Nation of Islam (NOI) in Fighting for the Civil Rights of Blacks in the United States in 1930-1976", with the background of the researcher's interest in the fighting for civil rights carried out by black groups in the United States. The fighting for civil liberties was carried out by the NOI organization which was formed in 1930. NOI is a black organization that uses Islamic principles in its movement, its main goal is the civil rights of blacks. NOI became a forum for black people's hatred against white people because of the racial discrimination they had experienced all this time. The main problem in this study is "how was the effort made by the NOI in fighting for the civil rights of black people in the United States from 1930 to 1976?" by using historical research methods (historical methods) which include heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, along with literature study techniques in collecting data on the topic of discussion. The concept used to analyze in this research paper is the concept of messianism, racial discrimination, ethnocentrism, and human rights which explain the background of the formation of the NOI, the efforts made by the NOI in fighting for the civil rights of black people from 1930 to 1976, and the impact of the NOI struggle on the civil rights of blacks in the United States. This study concludes that the background of the establishment of the NOI is to save the lives of black people in the United States from all forms of racial discrimination, segregation, and negative stereotypes that lead to the fighting for civil liberties. The efforts made by NOI in fighting for the civil rights of blacks is through restoring the identity and confidence of the African-American race, developing an independent economy, and establishing relations with other countries. Then the impact given by NOI on its fighting for civil liberties was to raise the status of blacks socially and economically, to build a number of black assets in the form of shops, restaurants, schools, land, and a newspaper called Muhammad Speaks.
