Abstract

Penelitian ini berupaya mengungkap proses mental/kognisi penguasaan kosakata tulis bahasa Jepang sebagai bahasa kedua (L2), yaitu kanji bagi para pemelajar bahasa Jepang yang berlatar belakang bahasa tulis pertama(L1)nya pengguna huruf Latin-Alfabet. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Kasus yang dikaji adalah bagaimana proses kognitif para pemelajar bahasa Jepang dewasa ketika merekognisi karakter kanji. Proses kognisi terjadi di dalam pikiran dan bersifat abstrak, maka dilihat dari perilaku belajar dan gaya belajar kanji sebagai indikator/cerminan dari proses kognitif masing-masing responden. Responden penelitian ini adalah pemelajar bahasa Jepang dewasa (adult learners), di salah satu Perguruan Tinggi Negeri di Bandung Jawa Barat, dengan latar belakang kemampuan bahasa Jepang level dasar – menengah. Data dikumpulkan dari instrumen penelitian berupa angket, wawancara, dan dokumentasi video belajar kanji dari masing-masing responden. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam penguasaan kanji proses kognitif pemelajar bahasa Jepang diawali dengan proses mengamati karakter kanji mulai dari bentuk, cara baca dan makna kanji itu sendiri sesuai teori Takebe (1989) dan menggunakan alat sensori mereka melalui menulis dan membunyikan cara baca dari kanji tersebut sesuai dengan teori Working Memory Baddeley & Hitch (1974) dan teori Cognitive Information Process Miller & Pribram (1989). Selanjutnya, proses penyimpanan informasi dikontrol dengan melibatkan stimulus motorik berupa latihan menulis berulang dan membaca kanji terus menerus secara rutin dan berkala sehingga informasi tersebut tersimpan lama (Long-Term Memory). Berdasarkan kategori kanji Takebe (1989), terungkap ada dua pola rekognisi karakter kanji bagi pemelajar bahasa Jepang pengguna huruf Latin-Alfabet: kanji visual (logografi dan ideogram) menggunakan teknik mnemonik/asosiasi, dan kanji abstrak (ideogram majemuk dan ideogram-fonetik) menggunakan teknik menulis berulang dan membaca berulang. Untuk dapat mengungkap lebih lengkap proses kognitif yang terjadi pada minda pemelajar yang berlatar belakang sistem ortografi berbeda, penelitian selanjutnya disarankan untuk menggunakan alat tes yang analisis fMRI dan media software neuro-psikologi dalam memotret proses kognitifnya. This study reveals the mental/cognitive process of acquiring Japanese characters as a second language (L2), namely kanji, for Japanese language learners whose first written language background (L1) using Latin-Alphabet script. The research method used a qualitative research method with a case study approach. The case examined how the cognitive process of adult Japanese learners when recognizing kanji characters. The process of cognition occurs in behavior and abstract, so it saw from learning and learning styles of kanji as an indicator/reflection of the cognitive process. The respondents are adult Japanese language learners at one of the State Universities in Bandung, West Java, with basic – intermediate level Japanese language skills. Data was collected from research instruments in questionnaires, interviews, and video documentation of learning kanji from each respondent. The results showed that in recognizing kanji, the cognitive process of Japanese language learners begins by observing the kanji characters starting from the shape, how to read and to know the meaning of the kanji itself according to Takebe's theory (1989) and using their sensory tools through writing and sounding how to read the kanji with Working Memory Baddeley & Hitch's Models' (1974) and Cognitive Information Process Miller's theorys' (1989). However, the information storage process is controlled by involving motor stimuli in repeated exercises and reading kanji continuously and periodically to store the information for a long time (Long-Term Memory). Kanji categories on Takebe's (1989) that there are two patterns of kanji character recognition for Japanese learners who use Latin-Alphabet scripts: visual kanji (logography and ideogram) using mnemonic/association techniques and abstract kanji (compound ideogram and ideogram-phonetic) using repetitive writing and repetitive reading techniques. For further research, the subject of the study is to use the analyzes fMRI test tool and neuro-psychological software media to describe cognitive processes and reveal more accurately the cognitive processes that occur in learners' minds with different orthographic backgrounds.
