Abstract

Peat is cheap and widely available natural material. Peatlands in Indonesia is the largest in Southeast Asia having area of about 225.000 km2. Peat utilization asa adsorbent has been sought, but the low adsorption capacity led to the need of its surface modification. Hence, this study aims to modify peat from Kalimantan Indonesia using alkaline (KOH) treatment and to characterize the modified peat as adsorbent candidate. The peat modification method was conducted by teating it with 0.1 N KOH with an impregnation ratio of 1: 1.5 (wt.%) and then placed the mixture in the microwave oven with input power of 600 W for 6 mins. The FTIR spectra showed a shift and increase in the absorption at 1630 cm-1 which indicated an increase in the free carboxyl group and an increase in the wave number of 2980 cm-1 which indicated an asymmetrical –CH3 vibration. The peat surface area after modification has decreased from 9.576 m2/g to 2,432 m2/g. Based on the results of SEM characterization, the peat particles became more homogeneous and agglomerated in the modified peat due to the bond formed between the peat and KOH. This was confirmed by the EDS results showing an increase in mass percent of potassium increased by 0.18%. Although the surface area has decreased, the modified peat exhibits a potential as adsorbent due to the increase in active groups that are potentially useful for interaction with adsorbate molecules.
