Abstract

Kata kunci : Anderson and Krathwohl model, Bloom taxonomy, Higher order thinking skill, Online discussion. Whatsapp application. Abstract The use of Whatsapp as one of online learning platforms in education and other institutions especially during the Covid 19 outbreak has been massive. In this study, Whatsapp was integrated in online English discussion as a tool for teaching and learning activities. This study involved 31 students of eleventh graders. The aim of this study is to investigate whether online discussion mediated by Whatsapp application can promote students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS).. To achieve this aim, Bloom’s Taxonomy model revised by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001) was used with qualitative content analysis approach. Data were collected from document analysis in the form of online posting transcripts in Whatsapp group and student interview. Eighty two message units were obtained from 31 participants and the result demostrated that the promotion of students’ HOTS has been proven in which 51.22% of the student’s online postings were categorized as evaluating (C5), 36.58% categorized as analyzing (C4), and 12.20% categorized as creating (C6). This result indicated that HOTS has occurred with the evidence of presence of more analytical and evaluative thinking. The finding also showed a positive perception where the students perceived the use of Whatsapp to be enjoyable and useful for online learning even they suggested the method was also applied to other subjects.
