Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to apply the SIX-TIER EARTH SCIENCE DIAGNOSTIC INSTRUMENT (STESDI) to analyze the level of misconceptions and causes of misconceptions in students. The research method used is a combination research method (mixed methods) with a sequential explanatory design research design. The participants were 110 students from four universities in Indonesia, consisting of 29 men and 81 women. The instrument used in this study was STESDI with 17 questions. Misconceptions were obtained from students' answers at the first, second, fourth and fifth levels, while the third and sixth levels were used to determine the source of the causes of misconceptions. The results of the study revealed that the biggest misconception about hail did not condense in the atmosphere, which was 23.63% or as many as 26 students. In addition to data processing, CDQ (Confidence Discrimination Quotient) calculations were also carried out which experienced misconceptions, namely questions about liquefaction occurring on soft and sandy soils, questions with the misconception that hail does not condense in the atmosphere and questions with the misconception that there is no pattern of geographic location where mountains volcanoes formed, and misconceptions about the issue that the earth's moving plates lie between the oceanic crust and the continental crust. The value of the largest percentage of misconceptions from the CDQ calculation is different from the previous data processing, which is 29.09% or as many as 32 students. The biggest cause of misconception with a CDQ value of -0.10 is from the internet on questions with the misconception that the earth's plate is moving between the oceanic crust and the continental crust. Based on the results of the study, the STESDI instrument can be used to diagnose misconceptions and causes of misconceptions in Earth materials.
