Abstract

ABSTRACT Encapsulation is used to coat drug compounds so that they can function as drug delivery and can reduce damage to the drug compounds. As an encapsulant, nanocellulose can be used which can be obtained from the hydrolysis of cellulose. Nanocellulose has good biocompatibility, biodegradable, non-toxic and is useful for good drug delivery systems. This research is a literature review with a narrative model from 6 Scopus Q1-Q2 indexed articles published in 2016-2020. This study was conducted to determine the condition of nanocellulose preparation, characteristics, efficiency and test results of drug release (release) of drug compounds encapsulated using nanocellulose. The results showed that the preparation of nanocellulose can be obtained from various sources of cellulose through chemical (hydrolysis) and mechanical methods which produce nanocellulose measuring 2-70 nm with oval and round morphology. The process of preparation of various nanomedicines through encapsulation of drug compounds using nanocellulose takes place at room temperature for 1-6 hours. The results of the encapsulation of nanocellulose resulted in a product with a porous stem morphology with a swelling percentage of 150-750%. Encapsulation efficiency varies from 41-87.6%. The results of the drug release test showed that the percentage of maximum release of drug compounds ranged from 66-90%, within the maximum release time of 10-14 hours.
