Abstract

ABSTRAK Keterampilan geografi melatih dan memaksa peserta didik untuk bersikap kritis terhadap setiap informasi yang diterima dari berbagai media berdasarkan perspektif spasial dan fenomena geosfer, sebagai wujud masyarakat yang melek media agar tidak terbawa arus informasi yang bias. Fokus utama terkait literasi media adalah bagaimana mahasiswa menggunakan media dan mengkritisi pesan yang terkandung dari media atau yang biasa disebut dengan informasi. Namun pada tataran komunitas pendidikan, mahasiswa belum menunjukkan sikap mandiri terhadap melimpahnya informasi yang disampaikan melalui media. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat literasi media, tingkat keterampilan geografi, dan pengaruh literasi media terhadap keterampilan geografi pada mahasiswa pendidikan geografi di Universitas Syiah Kuala. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kuantitatif survei dengan alat pengumpul data berupa kuesioner. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa pendidikan geografi angkatan 2017, 208, 2019, dan 2020 sebanyak 292 mahasiswa. Sampel yang diambil sebanyak 169 mahasiswa dengan pertimbangan sampel adalah mewakili kriteria populasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat literasi media dan tingkat keterampilan geografi mahasiswa pendidikan geografi berada pada kategori sedang. Artinya sebagian mahasiswa pendidikan geografi di Universitas Syiah Kuala memahami fungsi media dengan sikap melek media dan menggunakan keterampilan berpikir geografi melalui keterampilan geografi. Selanjutnya pengaruh literasi media terhadap keterampilan geografi diperoleh dari hasil koefisien determinasi R square (R2) sebesar 42% dan sisanya dipengaruhi oleh faktor lain. Artinya, literasi media memiliki pengaruh terhadap keterampilan geografi pada mahasiswa pendidikan geografi. Mempertimbangkan hasil tersebut, sudah saatnya literasi media menjadi fokus kegiatan dalam meningkatkan keterampilan geografi pada mahasiswa pendidikan geografi di Universitas Syiah Kuala. The main focus related to media literacy is how college students use the media and criticize messages contained in the media or what is commonly referred to as information. However, at the level of the education community, students have not shown an independent attitude towards the abundance of information conveyed through the media. This study aims to determine the level of media literacy, the level of geography skills, and the effect of media literacy on geography skills in geography education students at Syiah Kuala University. The research method used is a quantitative survey method with a data collection tool in the form of a questionnaire. The population in this study were students of geography education class 2017, 208, 2019, and 2020 as many as 292 students. The sample was taken as many as 169 students with the consideration that the sample represented the population criteria. The results showed that the level of media literacy and geography skills of geography education students were in the medium category. This means that some students of geography education at Syiah Kuala University understand the function of the media with a media literate attitude and use geography thinking skills through geography skills. Furthermore, the effect of media literacy on geography skills is obtained from the coefficient of determination R square (R2) of 42% and the rest is influenced by other factors. That is, media literacy affects geography skills in geography education students. Considering these results, it is time for media literacy to become the focus of activities in improving geography skills in geography education students at Syiah Kuala University.
