Abstract
Self-autonomy is an essential factor of an individual's personality development which should be taken into consideration in education and counseling as well. Courage to assume responsibility and to make a decision are the essence of an individual's self-autonomy. A decision taken by individual could not be separated from his or her judgment on a particular social situation. It seems clearly observable that student's behavior today shows low level of self-autonomy. This evidence require a higher education institution to assume a mission of developing student's self-autonomy beside its academic and professional functions. The Problems The present study concerns about the previously discussed issues on self-autonomy and social judgement related to empathic behavior and value orientation, and focused on the following main problems. 1. How is the profile of students' self-autonomy? 2. To what extent is the students' social judgment orientation congruent with their self-autonomy? 3. What factors contribute the students' social judgment Three main factors are considered to have significant contribution to the students' orientation of social judgment , namely (1) empathic behavior, (2) values reference orientation, and (3) significance level of value reference. The Approaches Both empirical-statistical and psychological-philosophical appraoches were used in the present study. The conclusions were derived from statistical and logical infenrences. The Findings and Conclusions 1. The students' decision for action tends to be not autonomous. However, the students do have self- awareness in relations to their group, and they are able to find alternative thinking for making their own decision. 2. The students' social judgment orientation tends to be in the conventional and post conventional level, and in makaing social judgment, the students tend to have moral value and moral principle orientation. 3. The students" social judgment orientation are not congruent with their self-autonomy. 4. The students perceive social and religious values as the most meaningful values, but their action tendencies are economic value oriented.5. The empathic behavior has no significant contribution to the students' social judgement orientation, but it is storngly related to the significance level of value reference. These relationships are due to the fact that the students' empathic behavior is more distressful and the significance of value reference is in the hearth level, while the social judgment orientation is more strongly related to cognitive functioning. Discussion The interesting issues to discuss are the pattern of relationship between variabels. The findings imply that the cognitive power to make a judgment for a right action does not correspond with the willingness to actualize the judgment into the real action. It seems that paternalistic-collective pattern of Indonesian culture underlies the pattern of intervariables relationship. Implications and Recommendations The incongruency of the students' social judgment orientation with their self autonomy implies that cognitive functioning should not be separated from both affective and conative functioning. It means that in helping individuals (clients) to attain self-autonomy, counselor should consider clients' thinking, feeling, and willing as major and significant factors in counseling intervention strategies. Since the development of students self-autonomy is unseparable from the social- cultural condition, it is urgently recomended to develop counseling concept and strategies which are most appropriate to the Indonesian philosophy and social-cultural condition. The findings also imply that the preventive and promotive functions should be assumed as major strategies in students counseling. The findings present practical implications for the personality counseling that the whole process should be aim at promoting a fullest development of the individual's personality, where the counselor helps him or her to attain values integration in their personal life, to develop abilities of understanding people, and to find out a significant figure of identification- It is recommended that student counseling program in higher education should be set up as an integral part of its mission to attain its accountability. Futhermore, the counseling functions should be assumed by every lecturers but limited only to the relevance activities of their role and function in instructional process.
