Abstract

ABSTRAK Kecemasan berbahasa asing ditemukan sebagai tantangan besar di kalangan mahasiswa internasional. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi pengalaman Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) pada mahasiswa internasional UPI. Penelitian pendahulu dilakukan dengan melakukan survey pada 6 mahasiswa internasional. Survey yang dilakukan memberikan informasi terkait data biografis, penyebab dan gejala FLCA yang dialami partisipan. Selanjutnya, data primer dikumpulkan dengan melakukan wawancara terhadap 3 informan yang bersedia berpartisipasi lebih lanjut dalam penelitian ini. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teknik deskriptif kualitatif dengan melakukan data reduction, data display dan drawing conclusion. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sumber kecemasan muncul dari kesenjangan bahasa yang berdampak pada ketidakmampuan mengerti penjelasan dan koreksi dosen, melakukan presentasi, tanya jawab serta kekhawatiran akan ketertinggalan dan kegagalan. Bahasa Sunda juga ditemukan sebagai prediktor signifikan pada kecemasan yang dialami mahasiswa internasional UPI. Kata kunci: FLCA, Language Anxiety, Mahasiswa Internasional ABSTRACT Foreign language anxiety was found as a significant challenge among international students. This study was aimed to explore UPI international students’ experiences on Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA). A preliminary research was done through a survey to 6 UPI international students. The survey revealed participants’ biographic data, causes and symptoms of FLCA. Primary data then was collected through in-depth interview with 3 informants who were willing to further join this study. The data then were analyzed using descriptive qualitative technique by doing data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. The results show that the major source of anxiety is language gap that impacts to students’ inability to understand lecturers’ correction and explanation. Sundanese language was also found as a significant predictor to Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety experienced by UPI international students. Keywords: FLCA, Language Anxiety, International Students
