Abstract

Berjudul Being an Afghan man: Masculinity in Kite Runner, penelitian ini menginvestigasi sifat-sifat masculinitas atau peran maskulinitas di dalam novel Kite Runner yang ditulis oleh Khaled Hosseini. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan ekspektasi peran maskulinitas yang harus dipenuhi di dalam cerita novel Kite Runner sebagai upaya agar bisa menjadi seorang pria Afghan yang baik dimata masyarakat. Untuk melakukan identifikasi, penelitian ini menggunakan teori Maskulinitas dari Brannon (1976), Beynon (2002), dan juga penelitian maskulinitas khusus daerah Afghanistan oleh Echaves (2016). Berdasarkan hasil analisis, dapat ditemukan kurang lebih tiga ekspektasi peran maskulinitas yang harus dijunjung yakni pria sebagai kepala keluarga pencari nafkah, sebagai contoh kepada anak dan rekan, serta berani dan berjiwa pemimpin. Dalam penelitian ini, ada kesan bahwa pengaruh masyarakat pada sisi-sisi maskulinitas seseorang dalam novel cukup kuat.;---Entitled Being an Afghan man: Masculinity in Kite Runner, this study investigates masculinity roles and atributes in the novel Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini. The purpose of this study is to discover the expectations roles of man in the novel, in the attempt to being a prideful Afghan man using masculinity theory suggested by Brannon (1976) and Beynon (2002). Afghanistan masculinity proposed by Echaves (2016) is also employed. This study applies qualitative method utilizing textual analysis approach in order to answer research questions. Based on the data analysis, the findings show that the expected roles and attributes of men are: as the nafaqah providers; as the example for others; as courageous and capable to lead. The text implies that the society in the novel demands mostly a certain type of masculinity that influenced by the social and cultural context.
