Abstract

Analisis morfologi SAP memperlihatkan rongga-rongga besar akibat proses beku kering. ABSTRACT Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) has been synthesized from the crosslinked bacterial cellulose (BC). The BC was produced by utilizing the juice of pineapple peels waste as the culture medium. The absorption capability of SAP was improved by changing the form of hydrogel into aerogel using freeze-drying method. The crosslinker agent that used was glutaraldehyde (GA) with varying the mass of GA solution towards BC for studying the effect of SAP’s structure and performances. SAP was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) for indicating that the crosslinking between BC fiber was occurred, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to find out the effect of crosslinking to crystallinity, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to study the morphology of the surface. The result of the characterization showed that SAP crosslinked and caused an increasing in crystallinity index (CrI) from 52,21% of untreated SAP to 74,17% of crosslinked SAP with optimized concentration of GA. The analysis of SAP morphologies showed larger pores because of freeze drying process. The optimum performances of SAP is obtained at crosslinking agent concentration of GA 4%. The water absorbance of performance test showed the result that the swelling ratio (SR) improved as the increasing of crosslinking until it achieved the optimum point with the SR of 63,07 g/g. Swelling rate test obtained the result that the rate of water absorbency reached the equilibrium after 15 minutes. Meanwhile, water retention test did not show significant result between SAP and crosslinked SAP. Keywords: superabsorbent, bacterial cellulose (BC), glutaraldehyde.
