Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan respon siswa ketika dihadapkan pada soal cerita yang berbentuk well structured problem ditinjau dari prosedur Newman serta mengidentifikasi faktor penyebab terbentuknya respon siswa tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan instrumen tes, wawancara pendalaman, serta dokumentasi. Responden yang terlibat sebanyak 31 orang siswa kelas 8 SMP serta dua orang guru matematika di salah satu SMP Negeri Kota Bandung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dua kelompok siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal cerita berbentuk well structured problem yaitu siswa yang mampu menyelesaikan soal cerita dengan mengubahnya terlebih dahulu ke dalam bentuk persamaan (dengan pemodelan masalah) dan siswa yang tidak mampu menyelesaikan soal cerita dengan mengubahnya terlebih dahulu ke dalam bentuk persamaan (tanpa pemodelan masalah). Kelompok siswa yang pertama, mereka mampu menyelesaikan soal cerita dengan melewati semua tahapan Newman, dikarenakan pernah mendapatkan soal cerita sejenis. Kemudian, memiliki pengetahuan yang kuat tentang sesuatu yang belum diketahui yang dapat dinyatakan dengan sebuah variabel. Adapun diantaranya ada siswa yang tidak berhasil melewati tahap process skill, disebabkan kurangnya mendapat soal yang bervariasi. Kelompok siswa yang kedua, mereka hanya mampu mencapai tahap reading dan comprehension saja. Bahkan dalam suatu soal, tidak mampu melewati satupun tahapan Newman. Ini disebabkan karena mereka tidak mampu memaknai dengan baik pengetahuan yang pernah didapatnya. Selain itu, bahkan diantaranya ada yang sama sekali tidak mencatat apa yang sudah dipelajarinya. This study aims to describe student responses when confronted with word problem in the form of well structured problems based on Newman's procedures and to identify the factors that causing the formation of student responses. This research used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data obtained through instrument tests, in-depth interview, and documentation. Respondents involved as many as 31 8th grade students and two mathematics teachers in one of the Junior High Schools in Bandung. The results show that there were two groups of students in solving word problems in the form of well-structured problems, namely students who were able to solve word problems by converting them first into an equation (by modeling the problem) and students who were unable to solve word problems by converting them first into an equation (without modeling the problem). The first group of students, they were able to solve word problems by going through all stages of Newman because they got similar word problem. Then, they had strong knowledge about unknown values that can be expressed with a variable. As for some students who did not reached the process skill stage, it was caused by the lack of getting varied questions. The second group of students, they are only able to reached the reading and comprehension stages. Moreover, in one of the word problem, they were unable to reached of any Newman's stages. This is because they are not able to properly interpret the knowledge they have acquired. In addition, some of them did not even record what they had learned.
