Abstract

Sugar factory is one of the industries that produce the waste, either solid, gas, or liquid wastes. Waste that produced by sugar mills without due process of the WWTP will either be one of the problems because it can have a negative impact on the environment. Organic matter contained in wastewater will undergo decomposition to reduce levels of dissolved oxygen in the water. In addition there is also the content of organic matter such as: nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, aluminum, manganese, and magnesium. Therefore, it is necessary to study aimed to test the toxicity of industrial wastewater sugar cane on the organism, particularly to aquatic organisms. This research uses animals as test organism Daphnia magna is an international standard toxicity tests. The study was an experiment by using the method of Finney method, whereby the Range Finding Test there and Definitive test. Steps that must be done, including the preparation phase, the pre-research phase, and the phase of the study. Range Finding Test results showed 50% mortality organism Daphnia magna present in 10-100% dilution so that the serial dilutions used for Definitive Test is 15%, 22%, 32%, 46% and 68% (EPS, 1990). Data obtained from the Definitive Test then analyzed using Probit analysis. known value of 24-hour LC50 Definitive Test has a range of 36,42 to 51,22%. If the data from the three repetitions were analyzed directly then obtained LC50 values of 43,82%. Analysis performed on the data Definitive Test 48 hours of each repetition is known to have LC50 values ranging from 26,11 to 38,82%. LC50 values obtained from the analysis of the third direct repeat is 32,47%. Acute toxicity test results on the sugar cane industry wastewater to Daphnia magna in the 24-hour LC50 value of 2,15 mg / L. The figure shows samples of the sugar cane industry wastewater into the category of high toxic. Acute toxicity test on the 48-hour LC50 has a value of 1,59 mg / L which shows samples of sugar cane industry wastewater into the category of high toxic (Verma, 2008). Wastewater industry of sugar cane is said to have the high toxic views of LC50 values 24 and 48 hours, where the value of LC50 smaller,so the level of toxicity higher. Keywords: Daphnia magna, the sugar cane industry wastewater, LC50.
