Abstract

Skripsi ini berjudul “Pemikiran Santo Agustinus dan Dampaknya Terhadap Kekuatan Politik Gereja (397-800 M)”. Skripsi ini berasal dari permasalahan utama yakni bagaimana pemikiran Santo Agustinus dan dampaknya terhadap kekuatan politik gereja? Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) Mendeskripsikan latar belakang munculnya pemikiran dari Santo Agustinus. (2) Mendeskripsikan pemikiran Santo Agustinus dalam karyanya The City of God. (3) Mendeskripsikan perkembangan pemikiran Santo Agustinus hingga menjadi kekuatan politik gereja Katolik Roma. Metode yang digunakan oleh peneliti berdasarkan pada metode historis, di mana metode tersebut meliputi beberapa tahapan seperti heuristik, kritik, interpretasi dan historiografi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, latar belakang pemikiran Santo Agustinus tidak bisa terlepas dari keruntuhan Romawi Barat. Tuduhan bahwa Kristenlah yang bertanggung jawab atas kejatuhan Roma memaksa Santo Agustinus untuk membela agamanya. The City of God membentuk polarisasi mengenai dua masyarakat yang berbeda yaitu kota Tuhan dan kota dunia. Kota Tuhan merupakan sebuah tatanan masyarakat yang seharusnya dibangun oleh masyarakat Kristen dan akan menjadi sebuah cita-cita politik gereja untuk mewujudkan kota Tuhan yang ideal di dunia. Upaya gereja dalam membangun kota Tuhan dimulai dari Paus Leo I hingga Paus Gregorius I. Kolaborasi antara gereja dan kerajaan Franka merupakan puncak pemikiran Santo Agustinus yaitu dengan terbentuknya Kekaisaran Romawi Suci dibawah Paus Leo III dan Charlamange. Dua kekuasaan menuju titik keseimbangan antara spiritual dan duniawi. Sebuah negara yang melindungi serta menjungjung agama Kristen terutama kepentingan Gereja Roma diatas segalanya. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menambah literatur sejarah Eropa dan dapat dikembangkan pada penelitian selanjutnya.---- This thesis was titled "St Augustine thought and Impact to Political Power of the Church (397-800 AD)". This thesis comes from the main issue: how St Augustine thought and impact to political power of the church? The purpose of this research (1) to describe background from the St Augustine thought. (2) to describe St Augustine thought for his creation The City of God. (3) Describe expansion from St Augustine thought to be the political power of the Roman Catholic Church. The method used by writer is based on historical method, the method includes several phase such as heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. Based the results from the research, St Augustine thought can’t be separated from the Western Roman collapse. The Christian was impeachment who responsible for the downfall of Rome forcing St Augustine to defend his religion. The City of God was shape the polarization about two different society become city of God and city of World. City of God is a society order was supposed to built by Christian society and will be a political ideals of the church to realize ideal city of the world. The Church efforts to build the city of God starting from Pope Leo I till Pope Gregory I. Collaboration between the church and the kingdom of the Franka was top of St Augustine thought that with established of the Holy Roman Empire under Pope Leo III and Charlamange. Two power towards of balance between spiritual and temporal. A country who protect and carried of Christianity especially Roman Church necessary is all above than else. Results of this research are expected to increase historical literature of Europe and can be developed for the next research.
