Abstract

Because of importance of the role of potassium ions in living systems, such as for transport and growth, their existence around plant roots as ready-to-use nutritional reserves is researchers concern. For that case has been developed various holder, such as material controlled-release fertilizer (CRF). Release behavior of an ion from CRF material can be influenced by internal and external factors of CRF. In this study have been synthesized polyvinyl alcohol/glutaraldehyde (PVA/GA) hydrogel to study the release behavior of potassium ions and swelling in various pH conditions medium. The preparation of PVA/GA hydrogel includes the synthesis, drying, and washing steps. Hydrogel PVA/GA is prepared by mixing solution method with the ratio of volume of PVA and crosslinker composition is 1: 1. Characterization of PVA/GA hydrogels was performed with Fourier Tranform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Release behavior test of the PVA/GA hydrogel includes the absorption and desorption step. The absorption phase was carried out by soaking hydrogel PVA/GA respectively in two variations of potassium chloride solution concentration of 1.0 M and 0.5 M. Desorption step was performed on four variations of pH are pH 5, pH 6, pH 7, and pH 8 for 120 minutes at 25oC. Measurement of potassium ion concentration was done by conductometer and flamefotometer. Swelling test of the PVA/GA hydrogel was performed by hydrogel immersion in a varying pH aqueous medium and in various concentrations of potassium chloride solution. FTIR of PVA and PVA/GA hydrogel results showed a decrease in the intensity of the -OH group due to the formation of an acetal bridge, while the PVA/GA-KCl hydrogel FTIR result showed no change in functional group. The SEM results show that the PVA/GA hydrogel has a smaller surface pores than its inner pores, whereas the PVA/GA-KCl hydrogel SEM results show a lot of salt on its surface. On the release behavior test it is found that: 1) in PVA/GA-KCl (1.0 M) hydrogel and PVA / GA-KCl (0.5 M) hydrogel, the more acidic (pH 5) and the more alkaline (pH 8) the desorption medium, the higher the concentration of release potassium ion compared with the release at pH 6 and 7, and 2) the quantity of potassium ion released from PVA/GA-KCl (1.0 M) hydrogel is higher than that released from the PVA/GA-KCl (0,5 M) hydrogel. On swelling test of the PVA/GA hydrogel it was found that: 1) on swelling test in varying pH media aqueous, the higher the pH of the media then the swelling ratio maximum of hydrogel PVA/GA is greater, with SR is 185.57% at pH 8, and 2) on swelling test in KCl solution medium, the higher the concentration of KCl, the SR maximum of PVA/GA hydrogels is greater by% 168.34% at KCl 0.75 M, except in KCl 1.0 M which has the lowest SR maximum.---- Karena pentingnya peran ion kalium dalam sistem hidup, seperti untuk transport dan pertumbuhan, eksistensinya disekitar perakaran tanaman sebagai cadangan nutrisi siap pakai menjadi perhatian para peneliti. Untuk hal tersebut telah dikembangkan ragam holder, diantaranya adalah material controlled-release fertilizer (CRF). Release behavior suatu ion dari material CRF dapat dipengaruhi oleh faktor internal dan eksternal CRF. Dalam penelitian ini telah disintesis hidrogel polivinil alkohol/glutaraldehida (PVA/GA) untuk mempelajari release behavior ion kalium dan swelling pada medium beragam kondisi pH. Preparasi hidrogel PVA/GA meliputi tahap sintesis, pengeringan, dan pencucian. Hidrogel PVA/GA dibuat dengan metoda pencampuran larutan dengan perbandingan volume komposisi PVA dan crosslinker adalah 1:1. Karakterisasi hidrogel PVA/GA dilakukan dengan instrumen Fourier Tranform Infrared (FTIR) dan Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Uji release behavior hidrogel PVA/GA meliputi tahap absorpsi dan desorpsi. Tahap absoprsi dilakukan dengan merendam hidrogel PVA/GA dalam dua variasi konsentrasi larutan kalium klorida yaitu 1,0 M dan 0,5 M. Tahap desorpsi dilakukan pada empat variasi pH yaitu pH 5, pH 6, pH 7, dan pH 8 selama 120 menit pada suhu 25oC. Pengukuran konsentrasi ion kalium dilakukan dengan konduktometer dan flamefotometer. Uji swelling hidrogel PVA/GA dilakukan dengan perendaman hidrogel dalam medium aqueous beragam pH dan dalam larutan kalium klorida beragam konsentrasi. Hasil analisis FTIR PVA dan hidrogel PVA/GA menunjukkan adanya penurunan intensitas gugus –OH akibat terbentuknya jembatan asetal, sedangkan hasil analisis FTIR hidrogel PVA/GA-KCl menunjukkan tidak terjadi perubahan gugus fungsi. Hasil analisis SEM menunjukkan bahwa hidrogel PVA/GA memiliki pori permukaan yang lebih kecil dibandingkan pori bagian dalamnya, sedangkan hasil analisis SEM hidrogel PVA/GA-KCl menunjukkan banyak garam pada permukaannya. Pada uji release behavior diperoleh bahwa : 1) pada hidrogel PVA/GA-KCl(1,0 M) maupun hidrogel PVA/GA-KCl(0,5 M), semakin asam (pH 5) dan semakin basa (pH 8) media desorpsi, maka semakin tinggi konsentrasi release ion kalium dibanding dengan hasil release pada pH 6 dan 7, dan 2) kuantitas ion kalium yang di-release dari hidrogel PVA/GA-KCl(1,0 M) lebih tinggi dari pada yang di-release dari hidrogel PVA/GA-KCl(0,5 M). Pada uji swelling hidrogel PVA/GA diperoleh bahwa : 1) pada swelling hidrogel PVA/GA dalam media aqueous beragam pH, semakin tinggi pH media maka swelling ratio (SR) maksimum hidrogel PVA/GA semakin besar, dengan SR maksimum adalah 185,57% pada pH 8, dan 2) pada swelling hidrogel PVA/GA dalam media larutan KCl, semakin tinggi konsentrasi KCl maka swelling ratio maksimum hidrogel PVA/GA semakin besar dengan % SR maksimum adalah 168,34% pada KCl 0,75 M, kecuali pada KCl 1,0 M yang memiliki SR maksimum terendah.
