Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji pembelajaran berbasis STEM dalam meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif siswa dan engineering design behavior siswa. Sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari satu kelas dari kelas 4 di sekolah dasar di Kab. Bandung, Indonesia. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Pre-Experiment dengan desain One-Group pretest-posttest design. Pretest dan posttest diberikan kepada siswa untuk mengukur peningkatan kemampuan kognitif siswa dan Informed Design Learning and Teaching Matrix digunakan untuk mengkategorikan engineering design behavior siswa. Hasil dari perhitungan N-gain antara skor pretest dan posttest siswa dengan rata-rata skor N-gain sebesar 0.72. Hasil observasi engineering design behavior siswa menunjukan bahwa pada fase pertama rata-rata siswa dikategorikan sebagai desainer pemula, namun pada fase kedua siswa menunjukan performa lebih baik dimana rata-rata siswa dikategorikan sebagai desainer baru. Kesimpulannya, dengan pembelajaran berbasis STEM dapat dijadikan alternatif pembelajaran dalam proses meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif dan engineering design behavior siswa.---------- This research examines STEM-based learning in improving student's cognitive abilities and engineering design behavior of students. The sample of the study consisting of one class of grade 4 at primary school in Kab. Bandung, Indonesia. The research was carried out using the method of Pre-Experiment with the design of One-Group pretest-posttest design. Pretest and posttest were awarded to students to measure the improvement of student's cognitive skills and Learning Methods and Teaching Matrix is used to categorize the behavior of engineering design of students. The result of the calculation of N-gain between pretest and posttest scores of students with an average score of N-gain of 0.72. The results of observations of behavior engineering design students on the first phase show that average students are better classified as beginner designers, but in the second phase the students showed better performance in which average students are categorized as new designers. In conclusion, with a STEM-based learning can be used as an alternative to learning in the process of improving cognitive abilities and engineering design behavior of students.
