Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari korelasi antara sikap siswa menonton film berteks Bahasa Inggris dengan kemampuan mendengar para siswa tersebut. Selain itu, untuk mengetahui kemampuan mendengar mikro-makro mana yang memiliki korelasi tertinggi dengan sikap siswa terhadap menonton film berteks Bahasa Inggris. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah correlational design. Sebanyak 40 siswa kelas XI di salah satu SMA negeri di Bandung dipilih sebagai sampel penilitian. Instrumen yang digunakan yaitu kuisioner Watching English Subtitled Films dan Longman Diagnostic Pre-test Section 1 Listening Comprehension. Dari hasil perhitungan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan positif yang cukup antara menonton film berteks Bahasa Inggris dan korelasinya dengan kemampuan mendengar (r = .469, n = 40 , p < .002). Koefisien determination (r²) adalah 0.219, menunjukkan terdapat 21.9% dari nilai tes kemampuan mikro- makro siswa yang dapat diprediksi oleh menonton film berteks Bahasa Inggris, dan 78.1% lainnya diprediksi oleh faktor-faktor lain. Hasil kuisioner menyatakan mayoritas siswa (60.25%) merasa tidak setuju dengan manfaat dari menonton film berteks bahasa Inggris. Lalu, hasil tes mendengar mikro- makro menunjukkan mayoritas siswa(60%) berada di level tidak memuaskan berdasarkan letter-grade system (Kennedy in Bill and Harris, 1990). Kemudian, kemampuan mendengar micro-macro yang memiliki tingkat korelasi tertinggi dengan menonton film berteks Bahasa Inggris adalah mengenali bahwa makna tertentu dapat dinyatakan dalam bentuk gramatikal yang lain. Dengan jumlah 20.9% dari nilai tes, mengenali bahwa makna tertentu dapat dinyatakan dalam bentuk gramatikal yang lain yang dapat diprediksi oleh menonton film bahasa Inggris berteks. Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa menonton film berteks Bahasa Inggris memiliki potensi untuk digunakan siswa sebagai media pembelajaran dalam pembelajaran mendengar.---------- This study aims to discover the correlation between students’ attitude towards watching English subtitled films and their listening comprehension. In addition, it intends to find out which listening subskill that has the highest correlation with the students’ attitude towards watching English subtitled films. The research design that is used in this study is correlational design. Forty students of 11th grade at one of senior high school in Bandung are selected as the sample of this research. The instruments used are Watching English Subtitled Films Questionnaire and Longman Diagnostic Pre-test Section 1 Listening Comprehension. The result shows, that there is a moderate, positive correlation between students’ attitude towards watching English subtitled films with listening comprehension, which is statistically significant (r = .469, n = 40 , p < .002). Its coefficient of determination (r²) is 0.219 which means that total variations of 21.9% of the students‘ listening comprehension are predicted by watching English subtitled films, and the other 78.1% are predicted by other factors. The result of the questionnaire shows that most of the students 60.25% pointing out the disagreement towards the benefit of watching English subtitled films. Furthermore, the listening micro- macroskills test results show that the majority of students (60%) are classified in unsatisfactory area based on letter-grade system arranged by Kennedy in Bill and Harris (1990). Besides, the listening subskills that has the highest correlation with the watching English subtitled films is (recognizing that a particular meaning may be expressed in grammatical forms), with the r² is 0.209, this means that total variations 20.9% of students’ skill in (recognizing that a particular meaning that may be expressed in grammatical forms) can be predicted by watching English subtitled films. These results reveal that watching English subtitled films is potential to be taken as a listening media in learning listening among students.
