Abstract

This study is motivated by the fact of how the Topeng Kaleng is not well known by many people, specifically in Karawang and generally in West Java. This study aims to describe (1) the general description of the Topeng Kaleng; (2) the execution of the Topeng Kaleng performance; (3) the semiotic elements of the Topeng Kaleng; and (4) the implementation of the result of the study as a cultural reading text for grade XII of senior high school. In conducting this qualitative study, descriptive-qualitative method is used. Meanwhile, the techniques employed in collecting and processing the data are literature review, observation, interview, documentation, dan analysis. The findings reveal several things as follows. First is the general description of the Topeng Kaleng. Second is the execution of the Topeng Kaleng performance. Third is 35 signs comprised of 23 icons, 6 indexs, and 6 symbols that are found. Fourth is that the result of the study can be used as a cultural reading text for grade XII of senior high school. This study concludes that the Topeng Kaleng is an art that should be preserved since it contains signs that has meaning and it is useful for the life of Sundanese people as well as appropriate to be implemented as a cultural reading text for grade XII of senior high school. The suggestion to be considered by other researchers in conducting further study is that a deeper semiotics study that is linked to other studies is needed. Keywords: semiotics,text, culture, reading text Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kurang diketahuinya Kesenian Topeng Kaleng oleh masyarakat di Karawang khususnya dan umunya masyarakat di Jawa Barat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan: (1) gambaran umum Kesenian Topeng Kaleng; (2) pelaksanaan pertunjukan Kesenian Topeng Kaleng; (3) Unsur-unsur semiotik yang terdapat dalam Kesenian Topeng Kaleng; (4) Penerapan hasil penelitian sebagai bahan pembelajaran membaca artikel budaya di kelas XII SMA. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Adapun teknik yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan dan mengolah data yaitu teknik telaah pustaka, observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan analisis. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Pertama, adanya deskripsi gambaran umum Kesenian Topeng Kaleng. Kedua, adanya deskripsi pelaksanaan pertunjukan Kesenian Topéng Kaleng. Ketiga ditemukannya 35 tanda yang meliputi ikon 23, indeks 6, dan simbol 6. Keempat, hasil dari penelitian ini dapat dijadikan bahan pembelajaran dan evaluasi membaca artikel budaya di kelas XII SMA. Kesimpulanya, Kesenian Topeng Kaleng merupakan kesenian yang harus dilestarikan karna didalamnya terdapat tanda-tanda yang memiliki makna dan bermanfaat untuk kehidupan orang Sunda dan sesuai untuk dijadikan bahan pembelajaran membaca artikel budaya di kelas XII SMA. Adapun saran untuk peneliti seterusnya, diharapkan adanya penelitian mengenai semiotik yang lebih dalam yang dikaitkan dengan kajian lainnya.
