Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate the generic structure of suicide notes within the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach. It focuses on the examination of the rhetorical moves in suicide notes so that a pattern of occurrences which shows the communicative purpose(s) of suicide notes may be found. As it is believed that each genre consists of distinctive communicative purpose(s) that is(are) different from one another, the observation of communicative purpose(s) in suicide notes is hoped to lead to the establishment of a generic structure, which, in turn may help to clearly distinguish genuine suicide notes from fake ones. It is also hoped that, by adding the genders of the writers as one of the variables, this study helps shed a new light to the relationship between gender and language use. In conducting this study, a combination of descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach is used in analyzing the data to ensure a more thorough and accurate finding. The suicide notes collected are sorted into four different groups based on the time period of the writing and the gender of the writers, from which a sample of twenty percent is drawn as representatives. The findings suggest that there are several recurring moves in the suicide notes and that they share similar communicative purpose(s) and structure; the similarities suggest that suicide notes may be considered a genre in the perspective of ESP. However, it is also seen that the most often recurring moves are different across the four groups—a finding that suggests that time period and gender influence the use of language. The result of this study does not only enrich the existing literature on suicide notes and genre studies but also gives another insight about how language is used across time and gender and how the purpose of communication in suicide notes may be used to distinguish genuine suicide notes.;---Tesis ini bertujuan menganalisis struktur generik dari catatan bunuh diri melalui pendekatan Bahasa Inggris untuk Keperluan Tertentu (ESP). Penelitian ini berfokus meneliti rhetorical move yang terdapat pada catatan bunuh diri sehingga pola kemunculan move yang menunjukkan tujuan komunikasi dapat terlihat. Karena pendekatan ESP percaya bahwa setiap genre terdiri dari tujuan komunikasi yang berbeda satu dengan lainnya, maka penelitian akan tujuan komunikasi dari catatan bunuh diri diharapkan dapat menampilkan sebuah struktur generik yang pada akhirnya dapat membantu untuk secara gamblang menunjukkan perbedaan antara catatan bunuh diri yang asli dan palsu. Dengan diikutsertakannya variabel gender penulis, tesis ini juga diharapkan dapat memberikan pandangan yang berbeda mengenai hubungan gender dan penggunaan bahasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan kombinasi pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dan kuantitatif dalam analisis data untuk memastikan temuan yang lebih jelas dan akurat: data yang terkumpul dibagi menjadi empat kelompok yang berbeda berdasarkan waktu penulisan dan gender penulis; setelah pengelompokan tersebut sebanyak dua puluh persen sampel diambil dari populasi data yang ada. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pola pengulangan move tertentu dalam catatan bunuh diri; lebih lagi, terdapat juga kesamaan struktur dan fungsi komunikasi dalam catatan bunuh diri yang menunjukkan bahwa catatan bunuh diri memiliki genre tersendiri dalam perspektif ESP. Namun, hasil tersebut juga menunjukkan bahwa dalam masing-masing kelompok, jenis move yang paling sering berulang berbeda—temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa waktu penulisan dan gender penulis memiliki pengaruh pada penggunaan bahasa. Hasil penelitian ini tidak hanya memperkaya penelitian catatan bunuh diri dan studi genre yang telah ada tetapi juga menunjukkan bagaimana bahasa digunakan dalam kurun waktu yang berbeda dan juga oleh gender yang berbeda. Selain itu, hasil penelitian ini akan membantu mereka yang bergerak di bidang forensik untuk dapat membedakan catatan bunuh diri yang asli dengan memperhatikan tujuan komunikasinya.
