Abstract

Kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis merupakan hal yang sangat penting dalam proses pembelajaran sebagaimana yang terkandung dalam Permendikbud No. 21 tahun 2016. Selain itu, kemampuan kognitif berkaitan erat dengan keterampilan berpikir kritis. Hasil studi pendahuluan mengindikasikan bahwa kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa masih tergolong rendah, sehingga harus ada upaya untuk meningkatkannya melalui inovasi-inovasi pembelajaran. Strategi writing to learn diprediksi dapat meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui perbandingan peningkatan kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa antara kelas yang menggunakan strategi writing to learn dengan kelas yang melaksanakan pembelajaran konvensional, (2) mengetahui keefektifan strategi writing to learn dalam meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis, serta (3) memperoleh gambaran mengenai hubungan antara kualitas menulis dengan kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa. Desain penelitian ini menggunakan pretest-posttest control group design pada siswa kelas X di salah satu SMA yang ada di Kota Bandung. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan yaitu n-gain, effect size, dan analisis korelasi berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dari tes kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis, serta tugas menulis siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pada kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis pada materi usaha dan energi di kelas eksperimen, yaitu dengan masing-masing nilai n-gain sebesar 0,43 dan 0,54 yang lebih besar peningkatannya dibandingkan dengan kelas kontrol, yaitu dengan masing-masing nilai n-gain sebesar 0,26 dan 0,32. Strategi writing to learn dapat meningkatan kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa secara signifikan dengan masing-masing effect size sebesar 0,82 dan 1,84. Kualitas menulis berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan kognitif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa dengan masing-masing koefisien korelasi yaitu 0,52 dan 0,43. ;--- Cognitive ability and critical thinking skills is very important in the learning process as enclosed in Permendikbud No. 21, 2016. In addition, cognitive ability has a relating with critical thinking skills. The result of preliminary study indicated that students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills still belongs to low. Therefore, that there should be efforts to enhance students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills through learning innovations. The strategy of Writing to Learn had been predicted be able to increase students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills. The aims of this research are to (1) find out the comparative increase in the students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills between classes that use the strategy of writing to learn with classes that implement the conventional learning, (2) knowing the effectiveness the strategy of Writing to Learn in increasing students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills, as well as (3) get overview of the relationship between the students’ writing quality with their cognitive ability and critical thinking skills. The design of this research using a pretest-posttest control group design in students of tenth-grade in one of the High School in Bandung. Data analysis techniques that used are n-gain, effect size, and the correlation analysis based on data obtained from tests of cognitive ability and critical thinking skills, as well as writing assignments students. The results showed an increase students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills in the subject Energy and Heat in class experiments, i.e. with each value of n-gain of 0.43 and larger 0.54 its increase as compared to the control class, i.e. with each value of n-gain amounted to 0.26 and 0.32. The strategy of Writing to Learn can increase students’ cognitive ability and critical thinking skills significantly with each effect size of 0.82 and 1.84. The quality of the writing contributes in enhancing students’ cognitive and critical thinking skills with each coefficient correlation i.e. 0.52 and 0.43.
