Abstract

This study aims to identify how Google Docs is used in collaborative writing activity. This study also aims to analyze the development of students’ writing skill through Google Docs. The current qualitative study involved a lecturer and six students at an English Department in a state polytechnic in Padang, West Sumatera. The students were recommended by the lecturer to provide information contributing to this study. The data were obtained from three sources, including observations, document analysis, and interviews of a lecturer and students. The data were then analyzed and presented descriptively. The findings of this study show how Google Docs as online collaborative writing platform was applied in producing a narrative essay. Furthermore, the findings also describe the development of students’ writing skill during collaborative writing process using Google Docs. In conclusion, collaborative writing using Google Docs can be an alternative way to develop students’ writing skill although numbers of obstacles encountered during collaborative writing process using Google Docs. Therefore, it is suggested that the further research should be conducted longer or more than one single month. In addition, it is also suggested that feedback given by the lecturer and peers should be analyzed for future research. ;--- Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana Google Docs digunakan dalam kegiatan menulis kolaboratif. Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk menganalisis perkembangan keterampilan menulis siswa melalui Google Docs. Penelitian kualitatif ini melibatkan seorang dosen dan enam siswa di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di sebuah politeknik negeri di Padang, Sumatera Barat. Para siswa direkomendasikan oleh dosen untuk memberikan informasi yang berkontribusi terhadap penelitian ini. Data tersebut diperoleh dari tiga sumber, termasuk observasi, analisis dokumen, dan wawancara dosen dan mahasiswa. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dan disajikan secara deskriptif. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana Google Docs sebagai platform penulisan kolaboratif online diterapkan dalam menghasilkan esai naratif. Selanjutnya, temuan tersebut juga menggambarkan perkembangan keterampilan menulis siswa selama proses penulisan kolaboratif dengan menggunakan Google Docs. Kesimpulannya, penulisan kolaboratif menggunakan Google Docs bisa menjadi alternatif untuk mengembangkan kemampuan menulis siswa meski kendala ditemui saat proses penulisan kolaboratif menggunakan Google Docs. Oleh karena itu, disarankan agar penelitian lebih lanjut dilakukan lebih lama atau lebih dari satu bulan. Selain itu, disarankan juga bahwa umpan balik yang diberikan oleh dosen dan rekan sejawat harus dianalisis untuk penelitian selanjutnya.
