Abstract

This study aims to describe the symptoms of sound changes in bilabial and apicoalveolar consonant that occur when children with down syndrome pronounce the words. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method taking the subject of two incurred children with down syndrome average level in intellectual who have been diagnosed making phonological changes in word production because of dislogia at one of the SLBN in Bandung. The results indicated that they tended to mistake in pronouncing the words. The pronunciation error occured in two processes, namely the removal and replacement of the sound. The removal of sound mostly often done based on the theory of Crowley (1992) is the process of apokop with a percentage of 35% which is marked by the removal of sound at final position. Another trend is the replacement of the sound. Sounds articulated as a substitute sound have similarities to the target sound. It is in line with research findings of Nangoy (1995: 94) that when children with down syndrome fail to articulate or are unable to pronounce the phonemes, they tend to select phonemes close to the target phonemes or even replace them with another sound, so that the words coming up seem to be new words. Moreover, children with down syndrome tend to simplify the pronunciation of a word so find multi syllable words, they will utter it only in the last syllable. These findings confirm Slobin’s statement (1979) who explains that children will tend to utter or pay attention to the end of word form.
