Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of cohesive devices in students’ Sundanese storytelling. The focuses of this study on (1) type of cohesive devices used by the students in Sundanese storytelling; and (2) the contribution of cohesive device to create cohesive text. This study uses qualitative research through a case study design. The data are analyzed by using the concept of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) which have reconstructed by Halliday with Matthiessen (2004). Based on 8 data, there are 472 cohesive devices which is 20.34% grammatical cohesion and 79.66% lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion accured 96 times which consist of 30 conjunctions, 63 references, and 3 ellipsion/substitution. Then, lexical cohesion occured 376 times, they are 273 repetition, 47 synonym, 46 antonym, 8 hyponym, 1 meronym, and 1 collocation. Based on the data show that the Sundanese storytelling texts have good cohesiveness and contribute to appear partisipants in the story, keep the track of the story and support the generic structure of narrative text.
