Abstract

Anak low vision merupakan seorang yang masih memiliki sisa penglihatan fungsional yang dapat digunakan untuk aktivitas sehari-hari. Hambatan yang mereka miliki menjadikan mereka kesulitan dalam membaca huruf awas. Membaca memegang peranan penting untuk memperoleh pengetahuan juga untuk berkomunikasi. Dalam kasus ini, terdapat seorang peserta didik low vision kelas IV di SLBN A Kota Bandung yang belum mampu membaca huruf awas, padahal ia masih memiliki sisa penglihatan yang dapat dioptimalkan untuk membaca huruf awas. Salah satu upaya yang dapat membantu anak mengembangkan kemampuan membaca permulaan adalah penggunaan metode Fernald. Dilatarbelakangi hal tersebut, peneliti ingin mengetahui pengaruh metode Fernald terhadap kemampuan membaca permulaan huruf awas pada anak low vision. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan pendekatan Single Subject Research (SSR) dengan desain A-B-A. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, terdapat pengaruh positif penggunaan metode Fernald terhadap kemampuan membaca permulaan huruf awas peserta didik low vision. Hal ini terlihat dengan adanya peningkatan mean level kemampuan anak pada baseline (A1) sebesar 23.86%, intervensi (B) sebesar 79.06%, dan baseline (A2) sebesar 91.48%. Diharapkan, penelitian ini dapat dijadikan alternatif metode yang membantu mengembangkan kemampuan membaca permulaan huruf awas peserta didik low vision. Kata kunci: Kemampuan Membaca Permulaan, Metode Fernald, dan Low Vision. Low vision children is someone who still has residual vision that can be used for daily activities. Barriers that they have made them difficult, to read the letters sighted. Reading has an important role to get knowledge as well as to communicate. In this case, there is a low vision students in the fourth grade SLBN A Bandung who can not read the letters sighted, but he still has residual vision that can be optimalized to read letters sighted. An effort that can help a child to develop ability of reading is the use of Fernald method. Based on this matters, the researcher want to know the influence of Fernald method on early reading the letters sighted on low vision student. This research used an experimental method with the approach of Single Subject Research (SSR) with the design of the A-B-A. Based on the results of research, there is good influence the Fernald method on early reading the letters low vision student. It is seen by the increase in the mean level of abilities children at baseline (A1) of 23.86%, intervention (B) of 79.06%, and the baseline (A2) of 91.48%. Hopefully, this research can be alternative method that help to develop the ability of early reading the letters sighted low vision students. Keywords: Early Reading, Fernald Method, dan Low Vision.
