Abstract

Limbah daun mangga yang begitu melimpah diatasi oleh kebanyakan orang dengan cara dibakar. Hal tersebut tentu tidak ramah lingkungan, sehingga dilakukan cara lain yaitu dengan dibuatnya komposit partikulat menggunakan limbah daun mangga tersebut sebagai filler dengan ukuran partikel 100 dan 140 mesh. Matriks yang digunakan adalah polimer jenis Polypropylene (PP) dengan perbandingan komposisi partikel limbah daun mangga dan Polypropylene adalah 10:90, 15:85, 20:80, dan 25:75. Pencampuran dilakukan menggunakan Internal Mixer pada suhu 1800C dengan kecepatan rotor 50 rpm selama 6 menit, yang kemudian di cetak menggunakan Hot and Cold Press Molding. Sample yang sudah dicetak dikarakterisasi sifat mekaniknya meliputi uji tarik (tensile test), uji lengkung (bending test) menggunakan Universal Testing Machine dan uji kekerasan (hardness test) menggunakan Rockwell Hardness Tester sehingga didapatkan nilai kekuatan tarik (tensile strength), yield strain, modulus elastisitas tarik (modulus elasticity of tensile), kekuatan lengkung (bending strength), modulus elastisitas lengkung (modulus elasticity of bending) dan kekerasan (hardness). Pengujian dilakukan pada suhu 230 C. Hasil pengujian menunjukan adanya penurunan sifat mekanik seiring dengan bertambahnya komposisi limbah daun mangga sebagai filler pada komposit. Hal tersebut dikarenakan filler limbah daun mangga menurunkan sifat plastisitas dari polimer polypropylene. Sampel dengan ukuran partikel limbah daun mangga 140 mesh menunjukan nilai tensile strength, yield strain, dan modulus elasticity of tensile yang lebih besar dibandingkan 100 mesh, sedangkan nilai bending strength, modulus elasticity of bending, dan hardness menunjukan ukuran partikel 100 mesh lebih besar dibandingkan 140 mesh. Kata Kunci: Polypropylene (PP), Limbah Daun Mangga, Karakteristik Mekanik, Komposit Partikulat, Modulus Elastisitas, Tensile Strength, Yield Strain, Bending Strength, Kekerasan Rockwell Mango leaves waste which is so abundant settied by most people by burning. It is certainly not environmentally friendly, so another way is carried out, that is by turning the mango leaves waste into particulate filler with size of 100 and 140 mesh. The matrix used is polypropylene (PP) type polymer with composition ratio of mango leaf waste to polypropylene particles 10:90, 15:85, 20:80, and 25:75.Mixing was done using Internal Mixer at a temperature of 180oC with a rotor speed of 50 rpm for 6 minutes, which then are molded using the Hot and Cold Press Molding. Mechanical properties of the molded samples were characterized using tensile test, bending test using a Universal Testing Machine and hardness test using a Rockwell Hardness Tester to obtain the values of tensile strength, yield strain, modulus elasticity of tensile, bending strength, modulus elasticity of bending and hardness. Testing was conducted at a temperature of 230 C. The test results showed a decrease in mechanical properties along with increasing mango leaf waste composition as filler in the composites. It is because the mango leaf waste filler lowers the plasticity properties of the polypropylene polymer. The composites of mango leaf waste particle size of 140 mesh showed a greater value of tensile strength, yield strain, and modulus elasticity of tensile than those of 100 mesh, while the value of bending strength, modulus elasticity of bending, and hardness of 100 mesh particle size are greater than those of 140 mesh.
