Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh permasalahan yang terjadi di kelas VIII-G SMP N 2 Lembang yaitu rendahnya kemampuan pemahaman konsep siswa dalam pembelajaran IPS. Hal tersebut disebabkan karena pembelajaran IPS yang kurang melibatkan siswa serta kurang mintanya siswa pada pembelajaran IPS. Melihat permasalahan tersebut maka perlu dilakukan perbaikan dalam pembelajaran IPS yang membuat siswa terlibat langsung dalam pembelajaran sehingga siswa lebih mudah dalam memahami konsep yang ada pada pembelajaran IPS. Sehingga peneliti memilih Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan desain penelitian model Kemmis & Taggart (1988) yang terdiri dari planning (perencanaan), acting & observing (pelaksanaan dan pengamatan), serta reflecting (refleksi) dan dilakukan dalam tiga siklus. Peneliti mencoba menerapkan model discovery learning dalam pembelajaran IPS untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman konsep siswa. Penerapan model tersebut dapat dikatakan berhasil setelah melalui tiga siklus. Pencapaian tujuan yang diharapkan tergambar pada peningkatan hasil belajar siswa yang terdiri dari penilaian LKS, penilaian presentasi maupun kegiatan observasi, serta penilaian pencapaian indikator kemampuan pemahaman konsep. Berhasilnya penelitian ini dilihat dari adanya peningkatan pemahaman konsep siswa yang ditunjukkan melalui perkembangan aspek-aspek atau beberapa indikator dari kemampuan menerangkan, kemampuan menginterpretasi, kemampuan memberikan contoh (exampling), kemampuan mengklasifikasikan, kemampuan membandingkan, dan juga kemampua berempati. Seluruh aspek dari kemampuan-kemampuan yang dikembangkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman konsep mengalami peningkatan dari siklus I diperoleh predikat “cukup”, siklus II “baik” dan siklus III diperoleh predikat “baik”. Kendala yang paling dirasakan pada penelitian ini yaitu sulitnya mengatur alokasi waktu dengan langkah-langkah pmebalajaran yang banyak serta sulitnya mendisiplinkan siswa saat dilakukannya kegiatan observasi dilapangan. Hasil penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran Discovery Learning sangat efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman konsep siswa dalam pembelajaran IPS.----------This research is motivated by the issues raised in class VIII-G SMP N 2 Lembang. That is the lack of understanding concept ability of students in learning IPS (Social Studies). This issue occurs because the students are less involved in learning Social Studies and also because of the lack of students interest in it. Perceiving these issues, it is necessary to make improvement in learning Social Studies that can keep the students involved in learning, so that the students can easily understand the concepts that exist in Social Studies learning. So the researcher chose Classroom Action Research (CAR) with research design by Kemmis & Taggart (1988) which consists of planning, acting & observing, and also reflecting, these are performed in three cycles. The researcher tried to apply the discovery learning design in teaching Social Studies to improve the students' understanding of the concept . It can be considered successful after passing the three cycles. The achievement of expected goals is reflected in the improvement of students learning outcomes which consist of worksheets assessment, presentations assessment and observation, as well as accomplishment of indicator of understanding concept ability assessment. The triumph of this research can be seen from the improvement of the students' understanding of the concept which is demonstrated through the development of the aspects or some of indicators of the ability to explain, interpret, give an example (exampling), classify, compare, and also empathize. All of the aspects of the capabilities which developed to improve the understanding of the concept has increased from cycle I had "sufficient" as the result, the second cycle was "good" and the third cycle was "good". The most perceived barriers are the difficulty of regulating the time management with all of these learning steps and difficulty to discipline the students when doing field observation. The result of this study stated that the application of discovery learning design is very effective to improve students' understanding of concepts in social studies learning.
