Abstract
Metode elektrokoagulasi telah banyak dikembangkan pada pengolahan limbah cair industri kertas karena dianggap lebih aman, efisien dan ramah lingkungan. Pada penelitian ini, dirancang sel elektrokoagulasi menggunakan elektroda besi dan alumunium. Alumunium dan besi dipotong menjadi tiga bagian lalu disusun secara paralel. Sel elektrokoagulasi yang berhasil dirakit kemudian diuji efektivitasnya menggunakan larutan model lignin dan diaplikasikan terhadap limbah cair industri kertas dengan parameter pengujian pH, tegangan dan jarak elektroda dan waktu elektrolisis. Larutan hasil elektrokoagulasi dianalisa menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-VIS untuk larutan model lignin dan analisa konduktivitas, turbiditas, COD dan BOD untuk limbah cair industri kertas. Pada larutan model lignin, keadaan optimum dicapai pada pH 8, tegangan 14 V dan jarak elektroda 1.5 cm dan waktu elektrolisis 60 menit. Presentase penghilangan warna lignin adalah 93 % pada elektroda besi dan 97 % pada elektroda aluminium. Pada proses elektrokoagulasi terhadap limbah cair industri kertas diperoleh kondisi optimum pada pH 7, tegangan sebesar 14 V dan jarak elektroda 1.5 cm. Pada elektroda besi presentase pengurangan konduktivitas, turbiditas, COD dan BOD masing – masing sebesar 61.5%, 97.4%, 36.8% dan 30% pada waktu elektrolisis 60 menit. Pada elektroda aluminium presentase penurunan konduktivitas, turbiditas, COD dan BOD masing-masing sebesar 42.1%, 97.7%, 36.9% dan 50% pada waktu elektrolisis 60 menit ----------Electrocoagulation method has been widely used in wastewater treatment because it is considered as a safe, efficient and environmentaly friendly method. In this research, electrocoagulation cell was constructed using aluminum and iron electrodes. These metal plats were cut into three parts and were arranged in parallel modes. Electrocoagulation cells were than tested using lignin model solution and paper industry wastewater. The effects of pH, applied voltage and the electrode distance on electrocoagulation efficiency were investigated. The resulting lignin model solution after electocoagulation was analyzes using UV-VIS spectrofotometer. For the paper industry wastewater the analyzes comprised turbidity, pH, conductivity, COD and BOD. For the lignin model solution the optimum conditions were electrolisys time of 60 minute, pH of 8, applied voltage of 14 V and electrode distance of 1.5 cm. The Removal percentage of lignin under these optimum conditions are 93 % for iron electrode and 97 % for aluminum electrode. For paper industry wastewater the optimum conditions were electrolisys time of 60 minute, pH of 7, applied voltage of 14 V and electrode distance of 1.5 cm. For iron electrode percentage removals of conductivity, turbidity, COD and BOD was 61.5 %, 97.4%, 36.8 % and 30 % respectively. For aluminum electrode the percentage removals of conductivity, turbidity, COD and BOD was 42,1 %, 97,7 %, 36,9 % and 50% respectively.
