Abstract

Ilustrasi memiliki peran penting bagi siswa dalam membangun representasi mental terhadap informasi dari teks yang diterimanya. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis beban kognitif siswa SMA menggunakan ilustrasi dalam pedoman praktikum. Partisipan penelitian sebanyak 70 orang kelas XI MIA yang dibagi dua kelas. Kelas eksperimen menggunakan pedoman praktikum yang dilengkapi dengan ilustrasi pada langkah kerja, sedangkan kelas kontrol menggunakan pedoman praktikum konvensional (teks saja). Pembelajaran dilaksanakan pada kegiatan praktikum sistem ekskresi. Beban kognitif siswa ditentukan berdasarkan tiga komponen beban kognitif, yaitu kemampuan siswa dalam menerima dan mengolah informasi (MMI) yang dijaring dengan task complexity worksheet, usaha mental siswa (UM) dengan angket subjective rating scale berbasis skala likert, dan hasil belajar (HB) siswa diukur dengan post tes penalaran objektif. Besarnya beban kognitif ditentukan dari korelasi antar ketiga komponen beban kognitif. Hasil analisis data kelas eksperimen menunjukkan korelasi antara usaha mental dengan kemampuan menerima dan mengolah informasi serta hasil belajar berkorelasi negatif, sedangkan korelasi antara kemampuan menerima dan mengolah informasi dengan hasil belajar berkorelasi positif. Tidak semua korelasi kemampuan menerima dan mengolah informasi dengan kemampuan penalaran menunjukkan hasil positif. Kemampuan penalaran yang menunjukkan korelasi negatif adalah classifying, induction dan deduction. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa beban kognitif siswa pada kegiatan praktikum sistem ekskresi menggunakan ilustrasi pedoman praktikum pada kelas eksperimen lebih rendah dibandingkan beban kognitif siswa pada kelas kontrol --------- Illustration aid the buliding of mental representation of text information. This study investigated cognitive load using illustrations in practical guidance. Seventy high school of natural science students were divided into two groups: experimental group using practical guided which containing illustrations in the procedure and control group using conventional instruction containing text only. The instruction implemented in practical work of excretory system. Students cognitive load is defined by three components of it, the ability of students to receive and process information (RPI) is summarized by task complexity worksheet, mental effort students (ME) with a subjective rating scale questionnaire based on the Likert scale and students learning achievement was measured by a written post-test of reasoning proces. The amount of the cognitive load is determined based on the correlation between the three components of cognitive load. Results of data analysis on the experimental group presented correlation between mental effort with the ability to receive and process information and learning achievement have negatively correlated, whereas the correlation between the ability to receive and process information and learning achievement are positively correlated. Not all the correlation capability to receive and process information and reasoning skills showed positive results. The ability of reasoning which presented a negative correlation are reasoning ability of classifying, induction and deduction. We concluded that cognitive load in experimental group lower than control group, the result suggest that it is necessary using illustration in practical work.
