Abstract

This study was motivated by the results of observation conducted in State Junior High School 40 Bandung. Based on the observation of the researcher, the issue that occured in the classroom was related to the lack of students’ analytical thinking ability. Regarding the mentioned condition, the author affirmed that it was necessary to have additional learning sources that were expected to increase interest and analytical thinking ability of students in IPS subject through utilizing the daily newspaper “Pikiran Rakyat” with the Headline News as a limit of discussions. The use of headlines news which appeared in the newspapers could stimulate students to read the whole main points of news as well as to develop analitical thinking ability of students. The theory from Kemmis Tagart was applied in this action research. This study consisted of three cycles in which each cycle included four phases: planning, implementation, observation and reflection whose research subjects were students of class VII-B of State Junior High School 40 Bandung. The instruments which were used in this reseach were the observation sheet, field notes and interviews. Based on the results of the study at the first, second and the third cycle, there was a significant increase in students’ analytical thinking ability. Students were able to accomplish the indicators of analytical thinking as thinking logically, understanding the Headline, explaining what had been read, making an inference based on the issues, and providing solutions to the issues in the newspaper. In addition, this study could be used as a suggestion for teachers to be able to utilize the media to support learning process in the classroom for Social Studies or IPS in particular. Keywords: Analitical Thinking Ability, The Use of Headline News in the Newspaper Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh hasil observasi yang dilakukan di SMP Negeri 40 Bandung. Hasil observasi menunjukan bahwa banyak sekali permasalahan-permasalahan yang terjadi dalam proses pembelajaran di kelas. Berdasarkan telaahan peneliti hal itu disebabkan kurangnya media pemebelajaran dan buku sumber teks yang dapat menarik perhatian siswa hal ini dapat dilihat ketika adanya pertanyaan yang diajaukan oleh guru yang biasanya merupakan pengulangan dari uraian yang telah dipelajari sebelumnya, namun demikian siswa lebih banyak yang tidak bisa menjawab atau menerangkan kembali apa yang diminta oleh guru tersebut hal ini juga yang menyebabkan siswa kurang berpikir analisis. Berdasarkan kondisi tersebut di atas penulis merasa perlu adanya sumber belajar tambahan yang diharapkan dapat meningkatkan perhatian ataupun kemampuan berpikir analisis siswa dalam pembelajaran IPS yaitu media massa Koran dari Koran harian ‘Pikiran rakyat’ dengan batasan pembahasan Headline News. Pemanfaatan headline news pada media massa Koran dapat merangsang siswa untuk ingin membaca keseluruhan ini dari berita dan menumbuhkan kemapuan berfikir analisis pada siswa. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas ini menggunakan teori yang diadopsi dari Kemmis Tagart. Penelitian ini terdiri dari tiga siklus yang mencakup empat tahapan disetiap siklus yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi dan refleksi. Dengan subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII-B SMP Negeri 40 Bandung. Instrument yang digunakan adalah lembar observasi, catatan lapangan dan wawancara. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian pada siklus pertama, kedua dan ketiga menujukan hasil peningkatan yang signifikan. Siswa sudah dapat berpikir logis, memahami Headline, menjelaskan kembali apa yang telah dibacanya, menyimpulkan, dan memberi solusi atas masalah dalam Koran tersebut. Selain itu penelitian ini bisa dijadikan saran bagi guru untuk dapat memanfaatkan media-media pembelajaran yang dapat menunjang pembelajaran dalam kelas khususnya pembelajaran IPS.
