Abstract

The background to this research is the researcher’s concern with the poor toilet sanitation in which the researcher is employed, namely SMP Negeri (State Junior High School) 4 Situraja, Sumedang Regency, West Java Province. Based on the researcher’s observation and analysis, the poor toilet sanitation in SMP Negeri 4 Situraja is not caused by the minimum sanitation equipment and inadequate infrastructure; rather, it is resulted from the low knowledge, attitude, and skills of students about the importance of maintaining school toilet sanitation. The research is aimed at improving students’ ecoliteracy competence in school toilet sanitation, both in the aspects of knowledge (head), attitude (heart), and skills (hands) through a series of observations and demonstrations in practicing school toilet sanitation. In this regard, one of the attempts to improve ecoliteracy is through social studies subject integrated into teaching and learning and demonstration method. The research adopted classroom action research to the class of VII-A of SMP Negeri 4 Situraja, Sumedang Regency, West Java Province, drawing upon the design modeled by Kemmis and Taggart, consisting of four stages for each of the actions, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research itself was conducted in three cycles, including four actions in cycle I, three actions in cycle II, and three actions in cycle III. Based on the results, students’ ecoliteracy in toilet sanitation experienced improvement in the aspects of knowledge (head) in the first cycle, attitude (heart) in the second cycle, and skills (hands) in the third cycle, respectively. Hence, it can be concluded that social studies teaching and learning through demonstration method could improve students’ ecoliteracy in toilet sanitation in school.
