Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran bahasa, ada 4 (empat) keterampilan berbahasa yang harus dikuasai, yaitu : keterampilan menyimak, keterampilan membaca, keterampilan berbicara dan keterampilan menulis. Keterampilan membaca merupakan keterampilan berbahasa yang relatif lebih mudah,namun tetap saja sering terdapat kesulitan yang dialami oleh para siswa. Salah satu penyebab kesulitan tersebut adalah penggunaan metode pembelajaran yang tidak sesuai dengan bahan ajar. Salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan untuk pembelajaran keterampilan membaca adalah metode Extending Concept through Language Activity (ECOLA). Dalam pelaksanaan metode ini, proses pembelajaran dibagi kedalam 5 tahap: tahap menentukan tujuan yang komunikatif untuk membaca, tahap membaca dalam hati, tahap mewujudkan pemahaman melalui aktivitas menulis, tahap diskusi dan klarifikasi pemaknaan dan tahap menulis dan menarik kesimpulan. Metode ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca terutama dalam pemahaman teks. Mots-clés: pembelajaran, kemampuan berbahasa, metode Extending Concept through Language Activity In language learning, there are 4 (four) language skills that must be mastered, namely: listening skills, reading skills, speaking skills and writing skills. Language reading skills are skills that are relatively more easily, but still, there are often difficulties experienced by the students. One reason for this difficulty is the use of learning methods that do not conform to the teaching materials. One method that can be used for teaching reading skills is a method of Extending Concept through Language Activity (ECOLA). In using this method, the learning process is divided into 5 steps: step setting a communication purpose for reading, step silent reading for a purpose and criterion task, step crystalizing an interpretation through writing, step discussing and clarifying interpretations, and step writing and comparing. This method aims to improve the ability to read especially in text comprehension.
