Abstract

Sebagai alat penyedia informasi untuk masyarakat, media berita memiliki peranan penting dalam mempengeruhi persepsi masyarakat tentang isu terkini yang sedang terjadi, dalam hal ini, pencalonan Joko Widodo dalam pemilihan umum presiden. Sehubungan dengan isu tersebut, studi ini dilakukan untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana Joko Widodo direpresentasikan dan apa saja ideologi yang mendasarinya. Kualitatif metodologi digunakan sebagai desain penelitian utama, didukung dengan beberapa kuantifikasi deskriptif. Data yang digunakan dalam studi ini berbentuk artikel berita yang diunduh dari halaman Detik.com dan Viva.co.id. Data dianalisis menggunakan teori representasi aktor sosial milik van Leeuwen (2008) dan didukung oleh teori transitivitas milik Halliday (2004) dan Eggins (2004). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Joko Widodo paling banyak direpresentasikan dalam kategori aktifasi-partisipasi-personalisasi di Detik.com dengan 20 kali kemunculan (32,26%). Sedangkan di Viva.co.id, Joko Widodo paling banyak direpresentasikan dalam kategori pasifasi-partisipasi-personalisasi dengan 32 kali kemunculan (47,06%). Selain itu, berdasarkan semantic loads dalam teks, Detik.com cenderung merepresentasikan Joko Widodo secara positif. Sebaliknya, Viva.co.id cenderung merepresentasikannya secara negatif. Ideologi yang mendasari representasi tersebut adalah keberpihakan dan kapitalisme. Temuan-temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa media tidak pernah netral. Mereka cenderung mendukung seorang politikus dengan tujuan untuk mewujudkan kepentingan politik dan ekonomi mereka. News media, as a tool to deliver information to the people, have an important role in influencing people’s perception regarding a particular issue such as Joko Widodo’s candidacy in the presidential election. In relation to the issue, the present study was conducted to reveal how Joko Widodo is represented and to uncover the ideologies underlying the representation. Qualitative methodology was used as the major design, supported by some descriptive quantification. The data used in this study were in the form of news articles that were downloaded from Detik.com and Viva.co.id. It was analyzed by applying van Leeuwen’s (2008) concept of representation of social actors and supported by Halliday’s (2004) and Eggins’s (2004) Transitivity. The study finds that, in Detik.com, Joko Widodo is mostly represented in the category of inclusion, activation-participation-personalization with 20 (32.26%) occurences, while, in Viva.co.id, Joko Widodo is mostly represented in passivation-participation-personalization with 32 (47.06%) occurences. In addition, by looking at semantic loads contained in the texts, Detik.com has a tendency to represent Joko Widodo in a positive way, whereas Viva.co.id has a tendency to represent Joko Widodo in a negative way. The ideologies that underlie the representation are partiality and capitalism. Thus, the findings indicate that media are never neutral. They take side to one political figure in order to attain their own political and economic interests.
